Summary

This position is located at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, in the Resource Management Division.

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately March through October , and you will be in a non-pay status a minimum of one pay period (2 weeks) and a maximum of six pay periods (3 months) between November and February .

Duties

Serves as a Lead Biological Science Technician as part of the Resource Management and Science division in the Outer Banks Group.

Supervises the field operations of the Group's natural resources management and pony pens operations in the Ocracoke district. Serves as the Integrated Pest Management Team lead responsible for invasive vegetation treatment and pesticide use tracking.

Assists with research, conservation, and management of protected wildlife (sea turtles, piping plovers, least terns); the control of wildlife, or the determination, establishment, and application of the biological facts, principles, methods, techniques, and procedures necessary for the conservation, management and control of wildlife.

Collects data on condition of wildlife habitat and makes preliminary determinations on the cause of problems noted, ., drought, overpopulations, toxins. Seeks assistance for situations not covered by instructions or guidelines.

Independently develops or designs various aspects of research, inventory, monitoring, restoration projects and/or management and manipulation of biological resources on the basis of overall objectives outlined by the supervisor.

Implements biological resource management actions as a result of research and monitoring recommendations.

Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Evaluates observed conditions and problems, and interprets variables, trends, correlations, and interrelationships among data and conditions.

Enters and retrieves data from Geographic Information System (GIS) and/or other information management systems. Prepares graphs, charts and illustrations for reports and technical publications using computer software.

Recommends modifications to field activity procedures to accomplish project objectives; and prepares draft reports and correspondence relating to field activities and results.

Provides written comments on environmental assessments, resource management plan reviews, and park, regional office, or I&M planning documents. Contributes to technical and implementation components of compliance and planning documents. Drafts funding proposals for consideration.

Provides logistical support and area orientation for contact or cooperating scientists, provides technical information, ensures quality control, and solves logistical or operational problems within the scope of incumbent's authority.

Provides information to employees and visitors about natural resource management programs and may develop and present interpretive programs to the public.

Adheres to established control/quality assurance protocols and safety procedures.

Area Information
The Outer Banks are comprised of several beach destination towns including Manteo, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Buxton, and Ocracoke. The beaches and Albemarle and Pamlico sounds provide exceptional recreational opportunities, such as fishing, surfing, boating, and many other watersports. There are several highly rated elementary, middle, and high schools and numerous extracurricular activities available for children. These towns all have homes for sale or rent and are within reasonable driving distance. The Outer Banks has many modern conveniences, such as grocery stores, retail shopping, banks, a hospital, and many restaurants. The cost of living on the Outer Banks is somewhat expensive as compared to other eastern North Carolina communities.
