Duties

As a Wildlife Biologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

As Regional expert in waterfowl ecology, takes the lead for teams focused on regional waterfowl related issues including evaluation of habitat contributions and support of population objectives under NAWMP and communicating the importance of managing for wintering waterfowl within the Southeast Region in support of continental waterfowl populations. Utilizes the strategic habitat conservation framework to conduct technical assessments and recommends management and conservation actions on Refuges consistent with current understanding of waterfowl population ecology. Prepares reports, scientific manuscripts, designs large scale research studies and monitoring protocols, briefing materials, news releases, non-technical popular articles, presentations and other forms of internal and external communication to demonstrate the importance of Refuges in supporting waterfowl. Develops and maintain relationships with NWRS and Migratory Bird Program staff, a diversity of waterfowl managers/scientists representing nationally recognized partnerships (e.g., JVs, LCCs, Flyway Councils), nongovernmental organizations, and universities often requiring extensive travel within the Southeast Region.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 05/02/2024 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:
A. I have a bachelor's degree or higher in biological sciences that include: at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or related plant sciences. NOTE: Transcripts required.

B. I have completed a combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, PLUS appropriate experience or additional education. NOTE: Transcripts required and Your resume must contain sufficient detail of this level of work, i.e., complete begin/end dates, hours worked per week, duties performed, etc. for each timeframe for consideration.

Minimum Qualification [GS-13]
I have at least one (1) year of full-time specialized experience comparable to the GS-12 grade level in Federal service that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include 1) Developing recommendations for waterfowl ecology and management activities through monitoring and evaluation, determining effectiveness and needs to adjust recommendations; 2) Conducting onsite assessments for judging habitat conditions for achieving waterfowl population objectives; 3) Developing and analyzing biological study proposals, survey designs, scopes-of-work and implementing biological programs involving natural resources; 4) Providing biological advice and guidance to management in the development of management plans and coordinating management activities with involved agencies, researchers and other stakeholders. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
