About the role 

As our next School Crossing Warden, you’ll play an integral role within our School Crossing Patrol Team, you will be a lone working but will be interacting with members of the public such as parents, children and teachers whilst also having support from your supervisor. You will use the school crossing patrol pole to give clear signals to drivers and pedestrians in order to help children and adults to cross the road safely. You will communicate effectively with the children who are waiting to cross the road to ensure they do not step out whilst you are not assisting. In the event of any accidents or incidents which happen on duty, you would need to complete the relevant paperwork and report any vehicles that disobey to the police.

Job description

Job purpose 

To assist pedestrians to safely cross the road at a specific site during specified hours of the morning and/or afternoon.

Responsibilities 

To stop vehicles using the Crossing Patrol ‘Stop’ sign, to allow children and any other pedestrians to cross safely at an established crossing patrol site. To adhere to issued work instructions on the operation of the crossing site in line with approved procedures. Checking the operation of flashing amber warning lights and reporting faults if necessary. Reporting to the Senior Supervisor any traffic offence or problem which affects the safety of the warden or pedestrians using the crossing site. To judge the speed and distance of oncoming traffic before stepping into the road. To communicate clearly and courteously with children, parents, motorists, and the general public. To be alert and observant at all times. To be reliable, physically fit, and able to work outdoors in all weathers in a job which involves standing or walking for entire period. To be enthusiastic about the job and help to promote the service in a positive manner. To be able to work using own initiative and have a mature, responsible, and tolerant approach to the job. The post holder will be expected to maintain a good working relationship with Officers of the Department, adult and child pedestrians, Head teachers and school staff.

Essential requirements  It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.

The post holder is required to work outdoors during all weather conditions wearing the appropriate uniform. The post holder is also required to stand and walk during the entire period.

School Crossing Wardens work part-time hours during school term time only. Most posts have a split duty working both mornings and afternoons.
