This position is available for current regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Corrections, Oregon Correctional Enterprises, and Oregon Board of Parole, Probation, and Post-Prison Supervision with their current managers approval.

Deer Ridge Correctional Institution (DRCI) in Madras is currently recruiting to fill a full-time Chaplain position. This position is expected to start March 1, 2024, and the schedule is set for Monday – Friday 7:30am - 4:00pm (PST).  

The purpose of this position is to provide or facilitate a diverse range of religious services and activities including worship services, religious studies and activities, and spiritual counseling to Department of Corrections facility Adults in Custody.  The purpose of the position is to help the men and women to awaken, deepen, express, and practice their religion and/or spirituality within the prison environment and as preparation for reentry back into the community.  Candidates that have experience in Indigenous Spirituality, Eastern Religions, or Abrahamic religions, specifically Muslim, are highly encouraged to apply.

This position is represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) labor union. This recruitment will be used to compile a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.

About the institution

Deer Ridge is designated as an education and work facility for short-term adults in custody (AICs). The focus of its programs is Adult Basic Education and GEDs. Cognitive programs that teach and encourage self-change are also available. Inside work activities include institution maintenance and a commercial laundry. The prison provides minimum-custody AIC work crews for community service projects. It also sends crews out daily for other work projects, under contract primarily to government agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

All of the following:

a) a Bachelor's degree.

b) a graduate from an accredited seminary or theological school (professional/formal, full-time, resident religious training of a similar nature will be considered as equivalent to seminary or theological school).

c) be an ordained religious leader or possess current official endorsement/sponsorship from a recognized religious organization; and

e) three years of full-time experience as a religious leader (such as: minister, priest, teacher, rabbi, or imam) in a formal setting (such as in a parish, synagogue, tribe, temple or mosque).

Working Conditions

Working at a male correctional facility including regular contact with Adults in Custody (AIC). Office environment with extended use of computer terminals and physical paperwork.

Requirements for Employment

You must be able to pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following convictions are likely to result in being disqualified for this position: felony convictions, computer theft, identify theft and fraud. CJIS clearance is done at the conditional job offer.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range.
