Position Summary

This position is responsible for assisting veterans in obtaining the benefits to which they are entitled and records related to their service; conducting veteran-directed outreach to increase awareness of and utilization of programs and services of the Veterans Administration, community agencies and the Division of Community Services; fostering relationships between Shelby County Government and entities that provide services to veterans.

Pay Grade 51

Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education


Minimum Qualifications

100% -

1.Three (3) years work experience in veterans services, community outreach or related programs: AND

2.Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in social sciences, psychology, public administration or related field; OR

3.An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.

4. Must be honorably discharged from a military service branch.

5.Must attain within ninety (90) days after hire and maintain the required certifications including state certifications, Vetra-Spec, and PIV (Personal Identity Verification).

6.PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.


Duties and Responsibilities

1.Assists veterans and their families in filing for benefits and records from the Veterans Administration.

2.Educates and counsels veterans and their families about benefits and programs available to them from the Veterans Administration, the Division of Community Services and the community.

3.Develops and implements outreach and engagement strategies which facilitate access to the programs of Veterans Administration and the Division of Community Services.

4.Develops promotional and educational materials for veterans, their families and other audiences.

5.Establishes and maintains strategic relationships with internal and external community partners.

6.Represents Shelby County Government at veterans’ meetings, events and activities.

7.Plans and executes programs to enhance the lives of Shelby County veteran residents and their families.

8.Extends condolences on behalf of the Mayor to all known deceased veterans.

9.Identifies and/or develops opportunities to honor veterans.

10.Extends courtesies to veterans and surviving spouses who are ill or in nursing homes.

11. Attends required education meetings, events, and trainings to maintain certification as a Veterans Services Officer.

12.Conducts activities necessary to maintain current knowledge of laws and policies related to veterans and their rights.

13.Conducts activities necessary to maintain current certifications and access to Vetra-Spec and PIV.

14.Serves as a participant in the DCS outreach and engagement team.

15.Assists with data collection, analysis and reporting of outreach and engagement activities.

16.Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
