POSITION: Forestry Aide (3 Positions)

SALARY: $18.08 / hour DOE

REPORTS TO: District Forestry Officer

LOCATION: Omak/Nespelem District, Nespelem, WA

Basic Functions: This is an Entry level position that performs basic forest management work for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. This is the entry level in this series classification - individuals at this level desiring promotion to the next higher level (Forestry Technician I) will have to apply and compete for positions when they are advertised. An employee occupying a position at this grade level is responsible for assisting professional foresters, the Supervisory Forestry Technician (or Supervisory Forester), or Forestry Technicians of higher grade levels by performing a variety of technical forestry tasks requiring basic knowledge of forest biology, related physical sciences, and the practical application of standard forestry methods and techniques. The field work involves activities related to timber sale layout, sale administration on major timber sales, log scaling, timber cruising, and forest engineering assignments, fire suppression, and forest development. The nature of work is characterized by the varied nature of assignments.

Qualifications

Education and Training: 

Requires a High school diploma or equivalent (GED), with some course work in mathematics and science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.). A strong math and science background is highly recommended. Possession of, or the ability to obtain prior to hire, a Valid Washington State Driver’s License. In addition, employee must be insurable under the Tribe’s licensing requirements. Also Approved GSA Driving Abstract. Demonstrated ability to work with other Technicians as needed or as group, being CIVIL & Professional at all times Must be physically capable of performing the field position functions and possess the ability to work/drive in inclement weather conditions. Must be able to pass a WLFF Requirements/Training which includes Pack Test at the arduous level. Must be able to pass a Security BACK GROUND CHECK through the Federal Government, to access the Federal Building for job duties and maintain the status throughout the employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Requires Familiarity with forest environments. Knowledge in the use of tools and equipment specific to forestry operations. Knowledge of forest fire suppression techniques. Ability to identify all local species of trees in forest or log yard. Ability to conduct various forest surveys. Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks in the outside environment, work under all types of weather and terrain conditions. Ability to make mathematical computations with speed and accuracy. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and the ability to apply guidelines to varied and specific situations. Ability to work flexible hours and overtime, as needed to meet work assignments. Skill in the use of various manual and power tools and equipment used in forestry operations. Familiarity and working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and data base software, Trimble GPS.
