Registered Nurse-Perioperative/GI Endoscopy Float

Summary

The Perioperative/ GI Endoscopy Float RN is a member of the Surgical Service whose role is to provide safe, prompt, and skillful pre procedural, post procedural and/or intra-procedural nursing care for patients requiring an invasive diagnostic or treatment procedure. The acuity of patients is within the range of those appropriate for outpatient ambulatory care having GI procedures with or without conscious sedation.

Duties

Nursing care includes:

1) assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patients pre-procedurally, intra-procedurally and post-procedurally
2) coordination and management of patient care during all phases of the procedure and recovery phase
3) interpretation of signs, symptoms, and diagnostic monitoring with reporting, documentation, and implementation of ordered interventions during the pre or post-procedural period
4) implementation of standards of care and practice for patients undergoing endoscopic or surgery procedures
5) implementation of procedural prepping, specific positioning, and intra-procedural care
6) operation of specialized equipment associated with endoscopic procedures. Care is provided to patients with the goal of achieving quality patient care by improving clinical outcomes, increasing continuity of care and minimizing health care costs.

Clinical/Technical Skills
- Technical and operational knowledge and clinical skills to function as a Perioperative
urse in Perioperative services and/or as a circulating nurse in GI Endoscopy
- Promoting patient safety, continuity/quality of care and general well-being of the patient.
- Maintain clinical competencies through continuous study, in-services, and required training activities Based on education and experience, may be assigned responsibilities as preceptor or clinical nurse leader
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
- Knowledge of conscious sedation policies and procedures.
- Specific medication and IV therapy knowledge of emergency drugs, sedating agents, narcotics, reversal agents, and their compatibility with IV fluids.
- Ability to insert peripheral IV catheters.
- Ability to monitor patients using cardiac monitors to identify normal EKG rhythms, as well as lethal dysrhythmias and describe to provider and intervene to support emergency treatment procedures until arrival of Stat page Team

He/she is responsible for demonstrating and maintaining full competency in the use and pretreatment of reusable medical equipment.
The employee must ensure that the appropriate Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and manufacturer's instructions are followed for any step
in the use and pre-treatment of RME in which he/she is involved.
The RN promotes safe patient care by initiating active patient identification with every patient and does not use passive confirmation.
The patient's full legal name, including middle name, and full date of birth is privately requested by verbal response for each care encounter and compared to the electronic medical record.
In situations where the patient cannot provide correct responses themselves, family members, legal guardians, or conservators verbally provide the patient's identifiers.
To ensure safe patient care during invasive procedure or surgery, the RN actively participates in all steps of Universal Protocol, including pre-procedure verification process and "time-out".
