Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary

Work is supervisory and technical in nature. Assisting in directing the field operations of the Prevention Division of the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM). It includes fire prevention work, enforcing fire and life safety codes, regulations and laws. The position provides supervision of staff in the North and East counties. Including planning, assigning and evaluating personnel as well as participating in prevention activities. Supervisors periodically accompany Inspectors during inspection activities to evaluate compliance with Division Directives, completeness and occurrence of inspections and interactions with the regulated community. The individual selected for this position will work with the public daily. They will represent OSFM with every interaction and will be held to a high standard where good character, personal integrity, honesty will need to be evident. The individual selected will need to be skilled at de-escalation and conflict resolution.

Work involves conducting fire safety surveys of various occupancies, construction areas, analyzing and preparing reports of the results of the surveys and making recommendations to correct deficiencies. Assist local fire officials in planning and conducting public fire safety education programs, fire prevention strategies and inspection techniques.

Residency within the territory is required; preferred in the eastern portion of the territory supervised. Counties supervised by this position are: Cheyenne, east to Brown; Sherman, east to Pottawatomie; Wallace, east to Geary, Morris and Lyon; Greeley, east to Rice.

Qualifications

Licensing & Certification

Valid Kansas Drivers License 

Minimum Qualifications

Certified Fire Inspector 1 or be enrolled in the Fire Inspector 1 certification program and obtain the necessary certification within twelve months of hire date.

Certification with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services within twelve months of hire date. 

Quality written and verbal communication in all interactions. 

Must be able to give public presentations to small and large groups. 

Able to meet short deadlines while multi-tasking and staying mission focused. 

Must be comfortable and tactful in communicating with a wide variety of people. 

Must be able to effectively operate current technology as it relates to the position. 

Ability to effectively communicate and work with diverse groups and individuals. 

Quickly comprehend new topics to sufficiently communicate with internal and external audiences. 

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of the Kansas Fire Prevention Code and the 2012 National Fire Life Safety Code.

Field, code and mechanical aptitude background.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements
