Summary

Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).

Serves as a staff optometrist within the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. S/he performs direct medical care in their specialty; must be National Board Certified or Board Certified by the American Board of Optometry and have authoritative intensive knowledge in optometry.

Duties

The individual is responsible for maintenance of the highest standards of professional care in the outpatient management of Optometry patients served by the facility. In the event an ophthalmologist cannot be contacted, is expected to provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems to individuals presented for care.

Provide professional advice to medical staff upon request, in emergency situations, with regard to professional management of patients being, treated.-Provides professional services requiring full range of outpatient Optometry services consistent with the hospital's capabilities.

-Provides medical services and diagnostic procedures that are clear, concise, and in keeping with modern medical terminology.-Provides immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur to individuals presented for care. Provides professional advice to medical staff upon request and in emergency situations with regard to professional management of patients being treated.
-Responsible for providing specialty care and coverage on-call in accordance with department policy and requirements.
-Responsible for all administrative activities normally associated with patient care in a setting hospital such as consults and encounters.
-Maintains required continued Medical Education Martinsburg through conferences, reading programs or other approved CME events.
-Facilitates patient access to medical care by recommending appropriate referrals to other health care providers in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.

-Demonstrates the ability to establish effective working relationships within the surgical department and with co-workers, patients, support service staff, nursing staff, physicians and other Medical Center staff.
-Maintains self-control and responds effectively to requirements of a complex, high-intensity work situation.
-Adheres to personal and professional obligations and responsibilities with emphasis on practicing and maintaining high ethical standards.

Quality Assessment and Improvement

-Assists in the development of Primary Care Service Agreements in accordance with VA and JCAHO standards.
-Develop quality indicators and collaborates with Performance Improvement Coordinator regarding performance issues with team approach.
-Gathers data and provides the Performance Improvement and Risk Manager with timely feedback regarding quality and safety issues.

JCAHO Readiness

-Demonstrates current knowledge and the ability to implement JCAHO standards to improve patient care outcomes, including patient satisfaction by assessing and improving those processes that most affect patient care outcomes.
-Demonstrates ability and participation in patient care outcome evaluation and identifies the more important aspects of care for the health and safety of patients.
-Assists as assigned in preparation for JCAHO surveys.

Safety

-Maintains a safe work environment. Instructs and trains others in hazard communication, fire safety, emergency preparedness, and safe work practices specific to their individual jobs as assigned.

Age Specific Criteria

-Age-specific care, as identified in the Age-Specific Competencies, including knowledge of changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric age groups; ability to assess and interpret data about the patient's status' and ability to identify age-specific needs and provide the appropriate care based upon the age related factors noted.
