Are you a crew leader who is mechanically inclined and great at inspiring employees to improve their skills? Then, we want you to join our TEAM The Maintenance and Operations Division of Chesapeake Public Utilities has an opening for Crew Leader.

The Crew Leader position is responsible for crews of 2-6 people, training, skill development and safety compliance.

The Crew Leader position’s main activity is the repair and maintenance of Chesapeake’s Wastewater collections system infrastructure and completing pipe work with other agencies as directed.

Other duties of Crew Leader include:Maintaining and operating sanitary sewer valves, air vents, and auto-bleeds; adjust castings; replace ball-valves and lids; and the repair of other sewer and pump-station infrastructure as assigned. The Crew Leader coordinates with the GIS technician to document city sewer assets.Upholds Chesapeake’s customer service CARES standards when interacting with customers in the field.The Crew Leader operates and directs the use of a variety of manual and portable equipment as well as heavy equipment including pick-up trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, vacuum trucks, crane trucks, and a variety of portable and bench mounted power tools. Accountable for maintaining the required tool inventory on their assigned work vehicle.Administrative responsibilities for the Crew Leader will include the development and execution of a valve maintenance schedule; monitor and review work assignments and secure resources required such as labor, materials, tools, and equipment to complete work assignments. Completing various logs, timecards, and monthly reports. Assist with budgets and inventory as instructed. Perform basic office tasks such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning, and copying in support of your own tasks.The position of Crew Leader requires basic computer skills in Word and Excel.Performs supervisory functions such as interviewing and recommending selection of personnel: assigning and evaluating work; counseling and discipline. Attends staff meetings, training sessions, seminars, conferences, and classes to exchange information and improve skills. Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires high school diploma, GED or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at time of hire.
Special skills or equipment certification may also be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces.
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. 

Preferred Qualifications Supervisory experience2 years’ experience in underground utility construction and pipe workFamiliarity with basic data entry relating to work order systems.
