Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

Location: These two full-time, permanent positions are located in Roseburg

What you will do:

This position is a crucial part of the West Region Wildlife Research Program, contributing to rigorous scientific research aimed at informing wildlife management practices and enhancing methodologies for assessing wildlife population dynamics, movements, and habitat utilization. The primary responsibility involves providing field support, data entry, and project maintenance to assist the Wildlife Research team in achieving its objectives. Some of the duties will include:

  • Monitoring of Wildlife Populations and Habitats:
    • Utilize GPS and VHF radio-telemetry to monitor collared animals, assess movements, and habitat use.
    • Deploy and maintain non-invasive monitoring sites such as trail cameras and hair snares.
    • Conduct habitat and vegetation surveys.
    • Collaborate with departmental staff and other agencies for wildlife population monitoring.
  • Capture and Handling of Wildlife:
    • Assist in capturing and restraining wildlife using immobilization techniques.
    • Participate in assessing the physical condition and obtaining biological samples from captured animals.
    • Aid in attaching marking devices such as GPS collars and radio-transmitters.
    • Conduct field necropsies on mortalities to determine causes of death and collect appropriate samples.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Data Organization:
    • Record and enter collected data into computer files, ensuring accuracy and adherence to study protocols.
    • Provide maintenance for all research field equipment including vehicles, boats, and snowmobiles.
    • Operate and maintain vehicles during fieldwork.
    • Perform minor equipment repairs as required.

Working Conditions:

  • Field Job requires employee to travel by 4x4 truck, all-terrain vehicle or foot in isolated, rugged and uneven terrain during all seasons, and under all weather conditions.
  • Some risk during handling/collaring of trapped animals.
  • Work days may be in excess of 8 hours.
  • requires knowledge and skills in the use of computer, motor vehicles, optical equipment, photographic equipment, calculator, animal radio telemetry equipment, animal capture and immobilization equipment, horses and tack, and a variety of technical research and management equipment.
  • requires occasional use of a firearm and munitions to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals and birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters.
  • This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: .   • This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

Requirements/Requested Skills:

Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience:

  • Experience using ATVs on and off trails.
  • Experience using 4x4 vehicles on roads in inclement conditions including mud and snow.
  • Experience towing trailers with vehicles.
  • Experience locating radio collared animals, navigate using GPS receivers, and be able to use other electronic equipment as needed to meet research objectives.
  • Experience ordering, maintaining, and inventorying project equipment.
  • Experience collecting and recording data as part of research or monitoring projects.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Proficient in use of computers and electronic devices for data collection and management.
  • Ability to conduct field work under a variety of weather conditions ranging from heat in summer to cold in winter.
