General Statement

Under general supervision, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of heavy mobile equipment used at an assigned location of the District.

Supervises the operation and maintenance of such heavy equipment as locomotives, cranes, derricks, hoists, excavators, road graders, concrete mixers, air compressors, pumps, sludge handling and stripping machines and similar types of power driven equipment used by the District. Receives requests for use of heavy equipment and prepares work schedules for all three shifts, making revisions in schedules to suit operating requirements. Inspects equipment operation and equipment failures and specifies maintenance needs to assure proper functioning and maintenance of assigned equipment. Supervises the work of assigned Hoisting Engineers and Crane Oilers, planning and scheduling their work, directing and inspecting work progress, giving instructions and training in job duties and safety practices and making final inspection of completed work for accord with instructions, standards, plans and specifications. Requisitions and safeguards materials, supplies, tools, equipment and equipment parts required for work and keeps and reports accurate records of time spent on jobs. Cooperates and consults with other District personnel in order to coordinate operating and maintenance activities with those of other departments and trades. Checks adherence to safety rules and practices; administers first aid in case of injury and secures prompt medical attention when necessary.

Other Job Functions

Consults with other District personnel to determine job requirements and schedules. Performs any of the duties of a Hoisting Engineer as required. May requisition tools, equipment, supplies, and/or materials from the storeroom. May review and code timesheets, electronic time off requests and maintain vacation schedules online. Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics, adaptabilities and maintenance needs of heavy power driven equipment such as cranes, hoists, excavators, road graders and bulldozers. Basic computer skills. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Absolute Requirements

Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with an endorsement for vehicles with air brakes.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and six years of experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy mobile equipment, two years of which shall have been as a Hoisting Engineer, or an equivalent combination of experience and training in the trade.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Promotional Requirement

One year of service with the District as a Hoisting Engineer. Civil service status as a Hoisting Engineer.
