Candidate ProfileQualifications/Experience Required:
Education:
- Juris Doctorate from ABA accredited law school or international equivalent.
- Required certifications: Eligible to practice law in at least one U.S. state. Preferred: registered to practice before the USPTO.
Experience:
- A minimum of 10 years of experience negotiating, drafting, and reviewing complex intellectual property agreements
- Experience managing a sizeable global patent portfolio;
- Experience negotiating commercial transactions, including in the power, renewable energy or oil and gas is strongly preferred;
- Experience with polymers and renewables is strongly preferred.
Required Skills:
- Ability to analyze and summarize complex legal topics, aggregate decision-relevant information to convey messages clearly and concisely, and objectively develop, challenge, and verify conclusions;
- Ability to act autonomously in problem solving and complex, strategic decisions.
- Ability to manage large volume and variety of legal matters with competing deadlines and priorities.
- Comfortable working in cross-cultural teams, collaborating across country boundaries with a sense for diversity and inclusion
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
- The ability to manage internal and external teams while encouraging independent thought and recognizing differing viewpoints.

About the Job
The Legal Counsel serves as the initial point of contact for the intellectual property function in the United States, which is ultimately responsible for all of the intellectual property, including patent, trade secrets, and copyright, of TotalEnergies in the United States. This position also provides material support for OneTech technology transactions worldwide from a US law perspective. The active patent portfolio is sizeable, with hundreds of global patents focused on polymers and renewables.
Responsibilities:
Intellectual Property Activities:
- Act as Initial Point of Contact for Intellectual Property function on behalf of TEAS Legal.
- Act as primary legal counsel for with respect to intellectual property matters in the United States, including litigation and transactional matters.
- Act as primary legal counsel for the TotalEnergies US affiliate managing and directing global patent portfolios.
- Work closely with lead business counsel for cross-branch and cross-function activities related to Job Dimensions, including:
- Coordinate with business lawyers for all US affiliates, including design and implementation of standard templates documents.
- Cross-branch counsel on matters relating to intellectual property law, including patent, trade secrets, and copyright.
- Manage outside counsel and other vendors related to the above matters.
Legal Function Activities:
- Develop and implement legal training for Company employees (senior executives, senior managers, managers, and supervisors), on topics relevant to this function.
- Maintain commitment to the company's stated Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) goals and participate in initiatives and training, adherence to the company's compliance program, its Code of Conduct, and applicable laws.
