Laborer I- RENEW

General Overview

Performs duties involving manual labor for the demolition and deconstruction of abandoned properties in Cook County, which include but are not limited to: utilizing rakes, shovels, operate and maintain pneumatic tools (i.e., jack hammers, concrete breakers, sand blasters, saws, drills, power generators, air compressors, etc.). Assists in setting up control devices to provide a safe work environment. May perform tree and brush removal by using various hand held and power operated tools. Under the supervision of senior project managers will assists in the training and direction of inmate work crews.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Sets up perimeter fencing around properties.

Assists Sr. project manager in staging of vehicles and heavy equipment.

Utilizes rakes and shovels to clean up debris on work site.

Operates pneumatic tools such as jack hammer and other power tools used in demolition and deconstruction.

Performs tree and brush removal by operating chain saws, chipper and various hand tools such as piercing shears and weed trimmers

Uses shovels, picks, sledge hammers and often related hand tools for the purpose of demolition and or construction.

Assists other team members and drivers with cleaning trucks and equipment.

Substitutes for motor vehicle drivers when necessary.

Assists senior project manager in directing and training of inmate and post release program participants.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Familiarity with and ability to use various hand held and power tools which include but are not limited to shovels, picks, chainsaws, reciprocating saws etc.

Ability to perform manual labor of a physical and janitorial nature. Ability to work in various seasonal weather conditions. Ability to work a variety of work shifts and days

Ability to communicate effectively with team members

This position requires various types of physical exertion including but not limited to lifting, puling, pushing, and moving objects of moderate to heavy weight.

Ability to operate skid steer/track loader/bobcat.

Willingness to learn basic concepts of deconstruction techniques, methods and principles.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED

Must have a current Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class "A" (Must provide driver's license)

Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds

Demonstrated experience in leading a site crew and/or training.

Must have 5 years experience in demolition and or deconstruction of residential properties

Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) 10 certificationrequired (Must provide certification)
