Summary

A Psychologist at a VISN 22 medical facility provides a full range of psychotherapeutic, diagnostic and training activities to mental health inpatients and diagnoses mental disorders, particularly for complex or unusually difficult patients with psychiatric disorders under the supervision of the designated Program Manager and Chief/Assistant Chief of Mental Health Service.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Staff Psychologists diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological and/or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. Among the modalities provided are individual, family, and group psychotherapies. They consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Staff psychologists may be involved in program evaluation and/or research activities.

The psychologist applies advanced professional psychological diagnostic methods and evidence-based intervention strategies to a full range of patient problems in his/her work setting. S/he has advanced knowledge of psychological diagnosis, intervention, and behavioral health that qualifies him/her to provide advice and consultation to professionals representing a variety of disciplines. The primary job functions of psychologists at this level include the provision of direct psychological patient care, consultation services on difficult or complex cases, and education of staff and trainee supervision. However, some psychologists functioning at this level also have research obligations, associated with a university faculty appointment, collateral supervisory responsibilities, and limited administrative/managerial duties. The psychologist should be proficient in writing psychological reports, chart notes, and treatment summaries and should be able to complete work tasks in a timely manner.

Work Schedule : Various tours of duty based on the needs of the service. Occasional overtime, weekends, and holidays may be required as needed.
Telework : VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. This position may be authorized for telework. Telework eligibility will be discussed during the interview process.
