The Laundry/Sewing Room Worker II (Laundry Worker II) performs entry-level work in an institutional laundry to provide services for the facility. Activities include driving of state vehicles, sorting, classifying, weighing and recording of weights, operating Continuous Batch Washer system (CBW) loading of washers, loading and drying, flatwork ironing, sheet feeder, folding, shake-out, plastic wrapping, scale and preparing clothes and linens for delivery, pick-up and delivery to units and routine cleaning of work areas. Work involves both light and heavy physical labor. Works under close supervision, with minimal
latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Performs other duties as assigned. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Folds and inspects clothing and linen for needed repairs or special cleaning, presses clothing and linen, and operates the laundry-finishing equipment (small piece folder, and plastic wrap machine) to ensure that all clothing and linen arrives at the units in good repair, and in a clean and neat condition.

Sorts, classifies, weighs, and records all laundry in order to determine what laundry formula and size of washer will be used.

Prepares the flat-work ironer to be used by turning on steam at least one hour before using, starts ironer at least 30 minutes before using. Ensures all flat work items that come from the washers are shaken out, fed through, and neatly folded by the machine or by hand to ensure that all laundry arrives at the units in a clean and neat condition.

Performs pick-up, quota count, receiving and filling of orders, and delivery to Units/Departments to ensure continuity of service to the units served.

Operates washer and commercial washer/extractors. Loads and unloads the commercial washer/extractor with proper weight for the machine being used and selects the proper wash formula according to the degree of soil and type of articles being washed. Ensures articles are cleaned to the required specifications having a balance load, and safe efficient washing of materials processed.

Loads the dryer with the proper amount of linens, clothing, miscellaneous, setting the temperature, drying time, and cooling time of each machine to insure safe and efficient drying of materials processed.

Maintains a clean and safe environment to meet infection control and safety standards and reports to the Laundry Manager any problems encountered to insure a safe and efficient operation.

Attends and participates in all mandatory training in order to meet HHSC/facility requirements, maintain job competence, and develop professionally.

Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of laundering techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
Knowledge of institutional laundry operation.
Knowledge of the operation of equipment used in the laundry process.

Skills in the operation of commercial scale, CBW, washers/washer-extractors, dryers, flat-work ironer, folding, steam presses, plastic wrap machine, small piece folder, and in the use of soaps, bleaches and washing solutions.
Telephone and record keeping skills.

Ability to follow written directions and verbal communication.
Ability to distinguish colors.
Ability to receive and fill orders.
Ability to identify problems and/or solutions to problems and report them to Laundry Manager.
Ability to sort and record weights of laundry items.
Ability to read, comprehend and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
Ability to communicate effectively with people with diverse backgrounds.
Ability to perform basic math functions.
