Physical Education Teacher/Coach

Starting School Year

The successful candidate will be a nurturing and flexible person with a passion for teaching, coaching, and understanding of the developmental, cognitive, and physical needs of children ages 5-15. The candidate will have a commitment to our school's mission, demonstrating teamwork, collaboration, and service to the school community.

Foote School students participate regularly in a well-developed, age-appropriate, sequential program from kindergarten to ninth grade. Beginning in sixth grade, students may choose to participate on interscholastic teams after school. The Athletics and Physical Education Department emphasizes respect, team spirit, sportsmanship, fair play, adherence to the rules, independence, and the building of practical skills and physical fitness through cooperative games, exercises, and challenging activities.

Essential duties and requirements:

  • Plan and present lessons.
  • Prepare and administer regular and varied assessments of student learning.
  • Complete trimester reports of students learning and recommendations as needed.
  • Communicate effectively in support of each student with their parents, advisor, and other teachers.
  • Serve as a student advisor and homeroom teacher.
  • Serve as an advisor (or co-advisor) to one or more student clubs or activities (optional).
  • Coach 3 seasons of middle school sports (additional stipend per season)
  • Drive students to and from athletic events

Professional Skills and Personal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education or a closely related field; master's degree preferred
  • Experience teaching Physical Education to elementary and middle school children
  • Experience coaching middle school students and the ability to coach three seasons of our athletics program.
  • Understanding of differentiation as it relates to teaching physical education
  • Experience with Outdoor Education and ropes courses is preferred
  • Proven ability to work well as a member of a team
  • Valid CT license and approved CT public passenger endorsement is preferred, or the interest in obtaining this endorsement.
  • A commitment to professional growth and innovative thinking
  • A clear interest in being part of a community that seeks to challenge prejudice and is committed to diversity and inclusion
  • Strong personal and interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills
