This Registered Nurse - Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (Unit 1W) position is in Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder Inpatient Unit.

Registered Nurses as a member of the interdisciplinary team provide care to new and existing spinal cord injury Veterans through rehabilitation and sustaining care.

Some of the responsibilities of the Registered Nurse include the following:

  • Relies on preceptor to set workflow and identify responsibilities.
  • Completes initial assessments and reassessments and reassessments of assigned patients as directed.
  • Completes plan of care for patients and updates plan of care based on assessments.
  • Documents in a complete and comprehensive manner all assessments, findings, education and interactions with patients or their family units.
  • Administers medications in a safe and efficient manner following established policies.
  • Inserts and manages peripheral intravenous access (PIV).
  • Manages central venous access sites, infusion of continuous fluids and administers IV push medications under direct supervision of preceptor.
(Note-can manage without direct observation of preceptor once, competency has been established/validated.)

  • Completes admission and discharge of patients/residents in accordance with established unit policies.
  • The Registered Nurse is directly responsible to the designated manager in the assigned area.
  • The Registered Nurse possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting, which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and attainment of optimal levels of functioning and/or support of the dying patient, and significant others.

Tour of duty includes Day 7:30am to 4:00 pm, 7:30am to 8pm, Nights 11:30pm to 8am, 7:30pm to 8am, 3:30pm-Midnight.
