Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is a vital interface between global policies in the economic, social and environmental spheres and national action.

Its work is guided by the universal, integrated and transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 associated targets adopted by the UN General Assembly on 25 September 2015.

The Economic Analysis and Policy Division (EAPD) provides research and policy analysis on global macroeconomic trends and prospects, frontier issues, emerging issues, and issues associated with countries in special situations, in the broad context of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

EAPD also serves as the Secretariat to the Committee for Development Policy, an independent advisory body to the Economic and Social Council which provides recommendations on cross-cutting development issues and reviews the status of countries in the least developed country (LDC) category.

EAPD manages capacity development projects in developing countries, providing assistance through research, training and workshops. The intern will report to the Chief, Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division in DESA.

The intern will work in the core team to support production of the UN's flagship publication World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP).

She/he will provide quantitative and qualitative research inputs on macroeconomic topics and policy issues. The intern will work daily with the supervisor in the conduct of research.

Depending on the intern's background and assignments in the branch, duties and tasks may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct background research and literature reviews on latest macroeconomic developments, policies (monetary, fiscal, industrial, financing, trade) and sustainable development.
  • Conduct quantitative data analysis, including identifying and collecting macroeconomic data from primary and secondary sources, visualizing data, and conducting basic economic modelling;
  • Assist in updating and improving the economic models managed by the Branch;
  • Support the team in their day-to-day activities and tasks. This may include, for example servicing requests for information; support for developing presentations and updating databases;
  • Prepare a presentation on the work or the findings and outcomes of the internship to the branch's staff. This internship is designed to be full time and in-person but can be adjusted based on request by the successful candidate.
