Duties
Omaha Medical Surgical Department has the following specialty areas:
- Medical-Surgical unit located on 5 East. This unit serves the general Veteran patient population hospitalized for various causes including illness, surgery, testing, or observation.
- Medical-Surgical (Cardiology) located on 6 East. This position specializes in treating Veterans with serious or acute heart problems as well as various illness, surgery, testing, or observation.
- Medical-Surgical (Oncology and Orthopedics) located on 7 East. This unit specialized in the treatment of Veterans with a variety of conditions such as fall-related injuries, hip and knee replacements, amputations, and patients who are receiving chemotherapy agents.

The Medical/Surgical Registered Nurse duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care in an acute care setting.
- Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age-specific components.
- Works collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team with the goal of proving high quality and safe care to veterans. This would include working well with many providers, residents, students, social workers, case managers, ancillary departments, and patient family members. Effectively supervises care provided by nursing assistants.
- Provides/supervises all aspects of care including activities of daily living (ADLs). ADLs include but are not limited to: repositioning, ambulating, toileting, eating/drinking, bathing, oral care/denture care, nail care, grooming (shaving, brushing hair), skin care, changing linens and keeping patient rooms free of tripping hazards and generally tidy. All cares will be carried out while providing the patient privacy and dignity.
- Able to interpret cardiac rhythms and provide basic life support and/or advanced cardiovascular life support.
- This position may be required to float to other units.
Shifts are either day or shift and both shifts include rotating weekends and holidays.
- Day Shift: 7:30 am to 8:00pm
- Night Shift: 7:30pm to 8:00am
