Job Description:

The Academic Tutor is a part time staff position within the KHSC-KansasCOM to either the Learning Specialist or the Director of Student Life. Tutoring serves students currently enrolled in Kansas COM by assisting with academic success strategies. The primary responsibility of an academic tutor is to support students to become more independent learners, persist in their program, and reach their goals. Tutors provide individual and/or group tutoring to students across a broad range of courses based on their personal area of expertise. Tutors meet with students to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes, and help students solve specific problems. Tutoring supports classroom-centered activities, and as such, the emphasis and content of the tutoring sessions is determined by the student's needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:

Manage and do preparation for individual and/or group sessions.Recognize and utilize study techniques within the different learning styles and student preferencesCreate a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students' diverse cultures, language skills, and experiencesUse active listening strategies to allow student to determine content and pace of tutoringUtilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progressParticipate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skill and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skillsUtilize feedback and reflection to improve practiceRecognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learnersBe direct and kind with students at the same timeProvide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student successMake appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as neededFacilitate problem-solving with a curious mind and critical thinking skills QUALIFICATION(S): Bachelor's degree in any of the subjects listed or closely related field. Master's degree or Doctorate preferredReceived an A or B in one or more of the following subjects: Biochemistry Physiology Anatomy Pharmacology Immunology Embryology KEY COMPETENCIES: Excellent written and verbal communication and comprehension skills.Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality of privileged informationGood organizational skills and strong attention to detail.Ability to manage professional and interpersonal relationships and interact effectively with diverse members of the institutional community and outside constituencies.Commitment to diversity in the workplaceHired tutor will typically be offered 2-10 hours per week, depending on availability and need.
