Nutrition Supervisor (Zoological Supervisor 1)

Summary:

Zoo Miami currently has a full time Nutrition Supervisor (Zoological Supervisor 1) position available to assist with the supervision of our Nutrition Center team. We are searching for a team-oriented candidate that will be engaging and deliver exceptional customer service by creating friendly and positive interactions with all guests and co-workers.

This position reports directly to the Nutrition Manager. This team prepares approximately 1200 animal diets and is responsible for ordering, receiving and properly storing food items such as produce, browse, meats, seafood, live insects, hay, and dry feed. Routine completion of diet preparation using afore mentioned ingredients and food delivery for animals at Zoo Miami occurs daily along with ensuring a high level of nutrition for all animals under Zoo Miami care. Sanitation of the nutrition center through proper cleaning and hygiene of food/prep stations, dishes, tools and equipment, food storage areas, floors, hay barn and all aspects of the Animal Nutrition Center.

Daily responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:

Oversees operations of the Animal Nutrition Center to ensure accuracy, efficiency and sanitation in preparing approximately 1200 individual animal diets; develops standard operating procedures to improve operations and efficiency.

  • Prepares animal diets includes counting, measuring, cutting or weighing individual diet items including but not limited to meat, produce, whole prey, fish, bones, dry feeds, browse, live insects, hay and canned items.
  • Ensures proper use and maintenance of Animal Nutrition facilities and equipment including chiller, freezer, dishwasher, sinks and food processors.
  • Ensures that all food and supply items for food preparation are properly stocked, rotated, labeled and stored; develops and oversees protocols for weekly inventories, receiving items, placing orders and maintaining records including lot numbers and vendors.
  • Assists with sampling of feed items for nutrient analysis.
  • Ensure invoices for food orders are processed according to Country practices and assists with preparation of Country food item contracts.
  • Inspects prepared animal food for correct portions and proper balance of ingredients and additives; ensures food preparation area is clean, disinfected and properly sanitized as set forth by AZA, USDA, and Zoo Miami.
  • Serves as the internship/volunteer liaison; coordinates special projects and work to be performed in the Animal Nutrition Center, such as research and educational projects; conducts employee training for new or existing Animal Nutrition staff; evaluates and rates employee performance.
  • Supervise, plan, assign and review the work of subordinate Zoo Commissary Keepers; makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, and promotion of subordinates; schedules daily work routines of subordinate animal nutrition employees.
  • Reviews requisitions for equipment and supplies; assists with compiling necessary material supply lists;
  • Responds to emergency situations and natural disasters such as animal escapes, injuries, wildfires, and hurricanes in accordance to established operating procedures.
  • Performs related work as required which may include completing tests, attending meetings, workshops, etc.; eligible to serve and/or represent Zoo Miami in the following capacities:
    • Taxonomy Advisory Group (TAG)
    • Steering Committees
    • May participate on the weapons team
    • Animal Nutrition conferences
    • Nutrition Advisory Group
    • Species Survival Plan
    • AZA Animal Programs as an Institutional Representative (IR) or Program Leader
Experience Required

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Four years of experience with food/diet preparation or plans in a professional kitchen, feed store, animal facility or zoo to include supervisory experience is required. Coursework in nutrition may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years. Must possess a Driver s license. Must be able to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends on a varied work schedule.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Animal Nutrition, Zoology or other related field. Four years of experience with food/diet preparation or plans in a professional kitchen, feed store, animal facility or zo0. Two years supervisory and operations experience in a kitchen, feed store, animal facility or zoo.

This is a full-time position with excellent benefits with Miami-Dade County.
