Brief Position Overview

The Instruction Librarian position focuses on teaching undergraduate students and participates in the development, implementation, and assessment of library instructional initiatives.

This 12-month faculty position supports student success through engagement across our campus to equip students for life-long information proficiency.

The Instruction Librarian serves as a part of the new Instruction Department which offers a range of programs and initiatives that support student learning, access to essential tools and resources, and undergraduate student success.

General Statement

Duties and Responsibilities
Providing in-person and virtual reference assistance, library instruction, and one-on-one in-depth consultations in a range of subjects.
Creating reusable digital learning objects as well as course-related web pages and other guides.

Assisting students, faculty, and staff in making effective use of library and other internet resources, citation management programs, and applications software.

Providing remote assistance through phone, e-mail, and chat reference.

Working with early-career undergraduate programs such as the First-Year Seminars, Learning Strategies courses, and at-risk student initiatives to provide embedded library instruction.

Teaching credit-based library instruction courses.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Master's degree from an American Library Association-accredited graduate program.
Experience designing and facilitating instruction in the classroom and/or online.
Excellent written communication skills and excellent presentation skills.
Working knowledge of information resources and effective search strategies in academic discovery service tools and databases.
Experience utilizing the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and critical information literacy.

Comfort with a variety of digital literacy concepts, skills, and competencies, including data literacy, to advance foundational research practices in an academic setting.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
At least two years relevant professional experience in an academic library setting.
Demonstrated experience creating and editing digital learning objects, such as multimedia elements, video tutorials, and interactive learning elements.
Experience working with campus learning management systems.
Familiarity with educational learning theory, instructional design methods, and/or instructional technologies.

Demonstrated understanding of issues faced by diverse student populations, such as those experienced by non-traditional, first-generation, transfer, and/or international students.

Be committed to building relationships with campus faculty, staff, colleagues, and students to foster inclusive work and learning experiences.

Stay abreast of current information technologies and networks such as artificial intelligence and social media and how these inform our information environment.

The Program
The Department

The Instruction Department is a newly formed unit intended to provide a more intentional approach to the Montana State University Library's teaching, with particular focus on early-career undergraduate students.

The department offers a variety of approaches to instruction including workshops, embedded course instruction, tutorials, one-on-one consultations, and credited instruction.

The department's leadership is 3-year rotating position, giving all Instruction Department members the opportunity for skill-building and advancement in a leadership role.

The MSU Library has around 50 faculty and staff employees, including 14 tenure-track faculty, 33 staff members, and 25-30 student employees.
