The Registered Nurse - Mental Health Residential Recovery Treatment Program (RRTP)/Substance Use Disorder (SUD) executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care:(a) Leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning;
(b) Using advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes,
(c) Functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities,
(d) Systematically evaluating current practice, and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise,
(e) Guiding, developing, and supporting staff from a leadership perspective, and
(f) Using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities. (VA Handbook 5005, Part 11, Appendix G6).
Registered Nurse - Mental Health (RRTP/SUD) Direct Care Nurse/Staff Nurse Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components.
Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.
Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences.
Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs.
Functions as a team member under the guidance of the RRTP Nurse Manager and RRTP Program Manager.Must be self-directed and able to function with minimal direction, communicating proactively and effectively with other members of the multidisciplinary team and external stakeholders.
Responsible for coordinating medical and behavioral care for RRTP residents for care both internal and external to the program, milieu management activities and oversight of RRTP LPN activities, completing screenings for Veterans requesting to admit to RRTP, and providing administrative support when needed.
Demonstrates flexibility in taking assignments and completes a comprehensive system of tasks that are specific to RRTP.Works In partnership with the patient to create a treatment plan, monitor progress, and provide support for the patient as needed.
Must demonstrate the ability to observe, identify, and respond to the patient's needs for nursing care including patient education, medication administration, wound care treatments, EKG meter downloading, specimen collection Including various urologic and breathalyzer procedures, suture and staple removal, capillary blood glucose testing, equipment assisted care, assessing for suicide risk, and recognizing deviations from normal including monitoring for signs of substance use and withdrawal.
Responsible for ensuring safety protocols, including room checks and contraband searches are competed, conducting milieu activities and completing documentation.
Performs age and culturally appropriate care, uses techniques to appropriately de-escalate disruptive patients, and appropriately participates in emergency response activities.
Contributes to process improvement activities on the unit.Based on education and experience, the incumbent may be assigned responsibilities as preceptors or charge nurse.
The incumbent may have other duties as assigned, pertaining to this occupation, to meet the needs of the Agency, Department, Facility, and/or Service.
