The On-Site Host is an integral part of the Shearwater Cove team. While on shift, the host lives on site and is available to guests throughout the duration of their stay. The host greets guests upon arrival at Shearwater Cove and provides an orientation to the yurts, the hiking trails, and the sea kayaks. The host is available during normal business hours to answer guest questions or if guests need help with the kayaks and gear. Host provides guided kayaking sessions of 2.5-3 hours in length when a guided kayak session is booked (about 40% of days). The host is responsible for maintaining property appearance, maintaining kayaking gear, and some housekeeping duties. While at the Cove the host is on-call in case of guest needs or emergency.

Requirements:

  • Able to live off-grid for 4 consecutive days with limited access to phone service. Must be self-entertained. Cell phone service is not reliable at Shearwater Cove. Kayaking or hiking are required to reach a reliable connection. As such, connectivity to friends and family is severely limited while working.
  • Experience sea kayaking. Kayak guiding experience
  • Hospitality experience. The host is the main face of Shearwater Cove while guests are at the yurts. We strive to provide the highest quality of hospitality in our wilderness setting.
  • Ability to self-manage and work independently. During guest check-outs and check-ins the host will have contact with the boat captain, any additional cleaning staff, and periodically the operations manager. Otherwise, the host is the sole staff member on-site.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication. As the main staff person on-site, the host is relied upon to communicate supply and guest needs at the Cove to staff members in town.
  • Maintain a clean and professional appearance. Logo wear will be provided.
  • Physically fit - able to climb 500+ stairs a day. Ability to carry 30-40 lbs up and down stairs and over rocky pathways.
  • Attention to detail and cleanliness.
  • Ability to thoroughly and efficiently complete housekeeping duties as needed.
  • First Aid/CPR certification required. WFA/WFR certification preferred. WFA, WFR recert, and WFR certifications are available in Seward in March/April 2024.

Living quarters are provided at the Cove. Host provides their own food.

Shearwater Cove is a wilderness location ten miles by water from Seward, Alaska. The host has ample opportunity for hiking and kayaking and enjoying the rustic comforts of off-grid living.
