Position Overview
This position serves as a supervising sworn statutory peach officer; prepares, monitors, review and submits State and/or Division administrative work and records; assigns personnel to investigate complaints received pertaining to alleged violations of state and federal conservation laws and administrative rules; monitors and reviews all pending prosecutions related to conservation efforts within the District; interprets state and federal conservation laws and administrative rules, Department and Division policies; develops the administrative District's annual plan of work; enforces all Illinois Compiled Statutes; and as designated, serves as acting regional commander in the absence of higher level manager.
Serves as a supervising sworn statutory peace officer:
- Assigns and reviews work
- Provides guidance and training to assigned staff
- Counsels staff regarding work performance
- Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs
- Establishes annual goals and objectives
- Approves time off
- Prepares and signs performance evaluations
- Prepares, monitors, reviews and submits State and/or Division administrative work and records (e.g.
- Performs field inspections of personnel and equipment (e.g. vehicles, patrol boats, snowmobiles, trailers, firearms) within the District implementing needed professional or technical improvements.
- Coordinates enforcement action when investigations are completed.
- Maintains a liaison with county, state of US District Attorneys.
- Assigns personnel to testify as a state's witness.
- Maintains liaison with state, county and municipal police agencies in the District.
- Coordinates representation and/or represents the division at meetings.
- Coordinates and executes inter-agency law enforcement projects at the state and federal levels.
- Works with other agency administrators developing the Region or statewide plan of work.
- Develops and submits recommendations to the Region Administrator on annual fiscal requests for the District.
Enforces all Illinois Compiled Statutes, including federal laws:
- Apprehends violates, takes necessary prosecution procedures and submits required law reports.
- Functions as an authorized US Fish and Wildlife Depute Special Agency in conducting major investigations into violations of federal conservation laws and treaties.
- Provides assistance in coordinating law enforcement efforts between state and federal agencies.
- As designated, serves as acting regional commander in the absence of higher level manager, assuming responsibility for the daily management of the region or program.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of a bachelor's degree, preferably with major coursework in either law enforcement, social justice, or the social sciences, or in a related conservation field such as forestry or natural resource management, biological and physical sciences; equivalent training or related experience as a law enforcement officer or related technical conservation resource/public lands management experience may be substituted on a year for a year basis.
- Requires successful completion of an approved training program such as the Illinois Conservation Police Training Program which includes successful completion of the Illinois Basic Police Training Program.
- Requires three years law enforcement experience as a Conservation Police Officer.

- Ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.

- Ability to swim.
- Ability to work under adverse tactical conditions, exposed to outdoor temperature extremes and inclement weather.
- Ability to effect physical arrests.
