Fishburne Military School (FMS), the oldest and smallest all-male military boarding school in Virginia, seeks a full-time Upper School math instructor capable of teaching algebra and geometry for the school year.

Teaching in the 2024 summer program is negotiable. FMS serves young men in grades 6 – 12 with an optimal enrollment between 150 – 175 cadets. Day students typically comprise one quarter of the student body.

This is an opportunity for an experienced or aspiring math teacher to serve in a timeless and effective setting for the development of young men, yet one that is increasingly unique in American society.

Major duties and responsibilities involve teaching five sections of mathematics with typically two course preparations in Fishburne's Upper School.

Serve as an academic advisor to approximately 6 cadets and for two seasons a year supervise an afternoon activity or participate in coaching.

As scheduled be available to support students with extra help and demonstrate an attitude dedicated to helping our young men find academic success.

As FMS is a military school, teachers must support this model of education and adhere to policies that promote a healthy cadet climate.

This includes regular reporting of cadet infractions or academic concerns to relevant staff.

In accordance with its employee manual communicate regularly with cadets, their parents, and log student progress within the school's Blackbaud system.


As a boarding school, participation in weekly evening supervision of the barracks and occasional weekend duty is an expectation as is participation in the wider life of the school by attending extracurricular activities.

Occasional transportation of cadets in school vehicles is a requirement.

Teachers have the option of accepting officer rank in the Virginia Militia (honorary) which comes with appointment as a captain and offers promotion over time.

If a veteran, the teacher may wear their appropriate service uniform. This position reports to the Academic Dean.

The ideal candidate possesses an undergraduate degree with sufficient college math courses to ensure competent instruction of algebra and geometry.

A math degree and the ability to teacher higher level math (calculus) is desirable as is 3-5 years of teaching experience, but neither is required.

Experience using leading technologies such as Google Suite and Blackbaud education software is a plus. Military experience is not essential.
