Collections Specialist, Accounts Receivable

As a Collections Specialist, your primary focus is working as a liaison between the supported offices and collection agency, while also helping decrease Heartland Dental supported office's outstanding bad debt by adjusting accounts as they are sent to collections. You will work closely with Heartland Dental's supported offices and field administration offering guidance on steps to resolve patient account issues.

With more than 1,700 dental offices supported across 38 states, over 10,000 team members and over 1,700 supported doctors in our support, Heartland Dental has a proven track record of growth and success. We're looking for professional individuals who are open, positive and mentally flexible to join our network of support.

To give you an idea of the team structure, you will work independently but also with other members of the Collections Team, the Pre Collections Team, the Accounts Receivable Representatives Team, the Operations Team and Dental Offices. This position will report to the Accounts Receivable Supervisor.


Below is an overview of the duties and responsibilities associated with this position:

  • Compile account information to send to collection agencies on a weekly basis.
  • Review and adjust accounts as needed.
  • Process and amend Not Sufficient Funds checks and Bankruptcy accounts.
  • Post payments from collection agencies and balance on a monthly basis.
  • Must communicate and follow up effectively and timely with supported offices.
  • Complete monthly reports and share with field operations and supported offices.
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with supported offices and field operations, partnering as needed to resolve collections issues.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be able to go into the office one day a week – between Monday – Thursday. Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Superior organizational skills, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work well under pressure and prioritize multiple tasks, while maintaining a customer focus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communication information to callers over the phone
  • High level of integrity, work ethic, autonomy, professionalism and self-motivation
  • Analytical and strategic problem solver who is comfortable making decisions

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in collections, preferably in a healthcare setting
