The Technology Librarian performs a variety of professional librarian duties in support of library services and programs including in the areas of technical services, children's services, circulation services, outreach services, reference, and technology support and training.

The Technology Librarian has an area of specialty in information technology including hardware and software installations, several aspects of network maintenance.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Library Information Systems Coordinator to maintain all aspects of library technology systems for the staff and public.

With direction, will work with outside vendors to optimize systems.

Salary Range:
$ $ per hour. Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 3 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training.

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. with an occasional Friday night.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides training, assistance, technical, and functional supervision over lower level staff and volunteers.
  • Oversees library operations and staffs all public services in substitute capacity in the absence of other staff.
  • Reviews, selects, and orders Library materials.
  • Analyzes, updates, and orders ageappropriate materials for various sections within the library.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.
  • Performs circulation duties.
  • Processes requests for interlibrary loans.
  • Processes received items.
  • Actively participates in updating websites and social media platforms.
  • Produces digital promotional materials.
  • Contributes to Library newsletter.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings.
  • Instructs patrons and staff in the use of the Library and its resources and equipment.
  • Performs and assists patrons in computer searches.
  • Instructs patrons on the use of the Dewey decimal classification system, uses of all other Library equipment.
  • Refers Library patrons to community organizations and other alternate resources.
  • Maintains local community contacts.
  • Initiates, develops, and maintains positive relations with patrons and others.
  • Schedules and conducts orientation tours of the library.
  • Responds to and resolves inquiries and complaints.
  • Makes public speaking appearances before local groups and organizations.
  • Promotes Library usage through programming, public relations, outreach, and tours.
  • Develops and delivers age appropriate or target audience educational and promotional programs.
  • Provides instruction to patrons in the use of Library and online resources, and computer software and hardware.
  • Provides indepth information at the Reference Desk.
  • Develops digital archive of historical documents.
  • Setup and installs new computers for staff and patrons.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs computers, hardware and software.
  • Maintains, upgrades, customizes, and troubleshoots software, hardware, and related components.
  • Provides support for staff and public operations for technology and telecommunication services.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots network connections including switches, servers, Wi-Fi, network devices and monitors.
  • Maintains network connectivity with the City of Billings Information Technology department

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • Master's degree in Library Science or a related field; OR
  • Bachelor's degree with specialized certification in the library or related field and more than one year of experience; AND
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • A current Montana driver's license or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Requires a broad knowledge of all services.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience with library operations and knowledge of department or function operations.
