POSITION DUTIES

This is a unique opportunity to join an experienced leadership team as a Managing Tax Attorney in the Hearings and Appeals Division of the Comptroller of Maryland. The Comptroller acts as the elected chief financial officer of the State of Maryland. The office sees every dollar into the state, and every dollar out. There is no other statewide elected financial officer like it in the country in terms of the breadth of its duties.\r

The Managing Tax Attorney supervises tax attorneys who provide professional legal analysis and guidance to taxpayers and their representatives through the application of state and federal tax laws to the particular set of facts in appeals from taxpayers. Tax attorneys are responsible for resolving appeals and conducting hearings on contested tax assessments and refund denials for all taxes and fees administered by the Comptroller's Office. This would include personal and corporate income tax, sales and use tax, alcohol and tobacco taxes, motor fuel tax, digital advertising gross revenues tax, and unclaimed property. The Hearings and Appeals receives appeals from a diverse group of individual and businesses. Team members share a strong dedication to public service and a commitment to making a difference for Marylanders and Maryland businesses.\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Juris Doctor or equivalent degree from an accredited school of law. \r
Experience: Three (3) years of experience leading, supervising, or managing attorneys or paralegals. \r

Applicants may substitute graduate education in an academic field related to the required experience from an accredited college or university at the rate of one year of education for the required experience.\r
Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in judge advocate classification or judge advocate specialty codes in the tax law specialist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.\r

** For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at�\r

Admission to the Bar of a US State or Territory or the District of Columbia. \r
Certificate of Good Standing from the Maryland Court of Appeals. \r
Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. \r
