Department/Organization: Police Operations


Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm, all UA home football games, and occasional events


Job Summary: The UAPD Radio and Emergency Equipment Technician installs and maintains UAPD Radio shop, tools, and equipment necessary for installing emergency equipment in vehicles. Assists the Radio System Administrator with programming and maintenance updates of UAPD Radio equipment. Ensures radios, batteries, and other radio logistical needs are covered during large scale events on campus (football, debates, etc.).


Additional Department Summary: Responsibilities include the operation, repair and maintenance of portable, mobile and base station radios, microwave radios, data devices, dispatch consoles and local area networking devices for The University of Alabama Police Department. Additionally, patrol car modems and in-car camera systems.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Vocational/technical/trade school training in communications electronics; OR associates degree in electronics; OR two (2) years of radio systems technician experience and installation of emergency equipment in vehicles.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to work outside normal work hours to include nights and/or weekends. Must be available for on-call and call-out after hours in the event of a critical system issue. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in tight spaces, work both indoors and outdoors in variable weather conditions, climb ladders and work in high noise environments

Must have a valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions. Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Skills and Knowledge: Thorough knowledge and understanding of FCC rules and regulations.


Preferred Qualifications: Motorola Certificate of Completion of Astro 25 Simulcast, Conventional, 7.x Trunked System, Gold Elite or MCC7000 Series Dispatch Consoles, Motorola Mototrbo Conventional, Capacity Plus Trunking, and MIP5000 Console courses.

Experience maintaining NICE logging recorders.

Experience maintaining Mototrbo or DMR Radio Systems

Completion of FEMA ICS100, ICS200, ICS700, ICS800, COM-T Courses

Experience in emergency and disaster communications
