Law Enforcement Officer

This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, OJS, Division of Drug Enforcement in Bemidji, Minnesota and will serve as a Law Enforcement Officer (Canine) and is responsible for performing law enforcement duties, and to protect and provide public safety to communities within Indian Country

Duties listed are at the full performance level at the GS-11. If selected at the lower level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and receive training to develop in the position.

• Serves as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer for the Division of Drug Enforcement and has the additional duty of taking on a full-time canine partner and performing canine functions.
• Canine handlers are stationed on an Indian reservation or group of reservations subject to the criminal jurisdiction of the United States, a tribe, or tribes, involving Indians and/or Indian property.
• Interdicts illegal narcotics and performs additional patrol and traffic control activities on Indian Reservations.
• Conducts preliminary investigations utilizing a canine and apprehends and takes into custody suspected violators associated with any crime which may have been committed.
• Performs a full range of preliminary investigative duties including securing crime scenes, gathering evidence/information, interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, and assisting in completion of investigative reports.
• Conducts realistic drills/scenarios to properly train canine. Ensures compliance with safety requirements to negate violations.
