This position is dual-hatted and located in the Office of the Deputy General Counsel (Personnel and Health Policy), Office of the General Counsel, Department of Defense, and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (OUSD(P&R)), the Office of the Executive Director, with duty in the Office of Legal Policy (OLP). OLP is seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and innovative Attorney Adviser to draft agency policy, federal rules, and legislative proposals as well as review and provide legal advice on topics in OLP's legal portfolio.
- You will serve as both a policy and federal rule-maker in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, Office of Legal Policy, and as an Associate General Counsel in the Department of Defense (DoD) Office of General Counsel, Personnel and Health Policy.
- You will predominantly practice administrative law and develop agency-wide policies, federal rules, and legislative proposals in the following areas: Service members' prohibited activities including extremist ideology and conduct, victim and witness assistance, military corrections, clemency and parole, Service members' political activities, wearing of the uniform, military whistleblower appeals, Military Department Discharge Review Boards and Boards for Correction of Military and Naval Records, desertion and unauthorized absence, protection for Service members and their families under the Military Lending Act, and legal assistance including the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
- You will respond to requests for information, develop initiatives, draft written reports, and provide briefings on complex issues of national significance that may be submitted directly to and utilized by Department of Defense (DoD) senior officials, Congress, and other policy makers as well as provide timely, high-quality policy and legal options on sensitive high-profile topics.
- You will correspond regularly via written material and briefings with senior policy officials, senior legal practitioners, senior military officers, Members of Congress and their staffs, public and private sector legal practitioners, non-governmental experts, academic researchers, advocacy groups, and other members of the public.
- You will provide legal advice on applicable statutes, regulations, and policy.

- This position may require up to 10% occasional travel away from your normal duty station for official business on military or commercial aircraft
- This position requires incumbent to file an OGE Form 450, Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, upon appointment and annually thereafter.
- License required: Yes. J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction). Bar certificate.

Qualifications
Applicants must possess at least five years of relevant legal experience. Relevant legal experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
The ideal candidate would have Department of Defense experience and fluency in drafting agency policy or federal rules.
Education
Law Degree and Bar Membership. You must have graduated from a law school that is accredited by the American Bar Association; must be an active member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of a State, U.S. commonwealth, U.S. territory, or the District of Columbia; and be admitted to practice before a state or federal court; of good character, and in full compliance with continuing legal education requirements of an appropriate bar.
