Plans logistics of wilderness workers in association with trail maintenance and reconstruction projects.
Conducts safety meetings, trains the crew in trail maintenance utilizing primitive, and power tool skills. Prepares written reports, evaluations, and makes inspections for safety hazards.
Performs trail log, condition, and prescription surveys.

Serves as team or crew member to complete project analysis as required by NEPA and requests for motorized equipment use in wilderness.

Responsible for organizing and establishing low impact base camp when implementing maintenance and reconstruction projects.

Maintains daily record of holes drilled, trees felled, and number of overhead airplane flights as well as user groups contacted for Limits of Acceptable Change process.

Performs inventory and monitoring of specific resources.
Inspects assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications. Explains or enforces use regulations according to Wilderness Act. Administers outfitter use, prepares reports on conditions of outfitter camps and facilities.
Maintains visitors use records and prepares visitors use information for data processing.
Assists agency law enforcement personnel with violation information. Collects evidence and provides documentation for cases of misuse of wilderness areas. Documents destruction to or impacts on campsites. Analyzes ways to educate users.
Identifies restoration projects for planning future restoration projects. Trains crews in wilderness re-vegetation techniques.
Performs routine maintenance at dispersed recreation sites including site cleanup and naturalizing.

May participate as a team member on climb patrols on the District or Forest that includes mountaineering routes of technical terrain where ability to travel on snow, glaciers, steep rock, and mountainous terrain is a frequent activity.

The incumbent is responsible to know and use roped-travel techniques and safely conduct mountain travel with teammates using protective equipment.

Climbing patrols are conducted for the purpose of mountain familiarization, contacting independent and guided climbers, monitoring and evaluating outfitter guide performance and compliance with Special Use Permit.

Monitoring Special Use Permit to obtain route information to be published and communicated to the public, and to monitor public use of climbing routes and cross-country areas for the purposes of resource protection and wilderness management.

A high level of physical fitness is required to perform these duties.
Works closely with supervisor to ensure all administrative tasks are accomplished promptly and efficiently. Responds orally or in writing to general inquiries regarding wilderness management and/or issues.
Organizes or maintains a wilderness library of current issues, technical articles, maps, and slides.
Conducts education programs addressing Leave No Trace camping, wilderness philosophy and minimal stock impacts.
