BASIC FUNCTION:
An engineering management position with an emphasis on new product development activities in support of our strategy to grow through focused development of new market leading centrifugal pump hydraulics. Provide technical expertise, mentoring and leadership for major design/development projects including schedule, budget, design, development, detailing and testing of components and assemblies. Position involves helping to set the vision and leading a team in the application of engineering fundamentals to create innovative designs for wastewater and clean water applications including impeller and pump casing layout, CAD modeling, simulation and design validation. Must be able to communicate well with team, fellow engineering staff members, direct reports and other personnel within the company in the United States and internationally.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Help establish a hydraulic performance vision for a defined product family or target range.
- Develop a hydraulic target family curve strategy based on market needs and implement the strategy into new and existing product lines
- Lead and coach a hydraulic design team to review current and new pump hydraulic wet end losses, how to separate them and modify designs to optimize their impact
- Develop and document internal hydraulic design best practice standards including hydraulic performance, wear rings, volute geometry, solids handling and materials
- Provide technical leadership and troubleshooting for complex hydraulic related pump issues in the field
- Lead team in how to effectively use current company software such as CAD, FEA, turbomachinery design and CFD software as well as recommend new tools as necessary.
- Use advanced engineering concepts and principles, along with company, commercial, and government standards to provide technical verification for new or modified designs
- Establish test plans and computer model correlation strategies to validate new or modified designs, and prepare technical reports upon completion of tests
- Will have project and team responsibility for improving current and developing new designs as assigned.
- Responsible for the completion of engineering tasks with the technical personnel assigned
- Some travel is expected for training and engineering liaison activities
- Will be responsible for moderate to large sized projects as assigned
- Will help direct hydraulic design related activities at our design center in India as required.
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- BS in Fluid Mechanics, Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering; a BS in another engineering discipline is acceptable with the addition of hydraulic design experience. Advanced degree in a technical or management related field a plus.
- Three plus years of experience in a project engineer and/or engineering manager role
- Advanced understanding of pump and pump system characteristics including pump performance, NPSH, Efficiency and HP
- Experience designing centrifugal pumps / pump hydraulics including impeller, casing and wear ring design.
- Familiarity of solids handling requirements in wastewater applications and strategies to mitigate their impact a plus.
- Familiarity of industry standards in the water and wastewater industry including Hydraulic Institute, 10 States Standard, ANSI, NSF a plus
- The use of 3D CAD software is required. Solid Works 3D CAD experience is a plus, as is experience with FEA, CFD and Turbomachinery design software
- New product development experience using a stage-gate type development process is preferred
- Oversaw product development projects through the entire process from concept through launch
- Must have design and development experience with industrial rotating equipment
- Must be able to demonstrate project management success, either managing an entire development project or a portion of a development project as part of a larger team
