Basic Function

This position is responsible for the direction of the company's Health, Safety, Environmental (HSE) and Security programs and policies for the chemical and polymer manufacturing site located in Morris, IL. The position is also responsible for compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations: local, state, and federal. As part of the Morris Leadership Team, this position provides guidance, direction and coaching to safety and environmental professionals and specialists responsible for the delivery of HSE processes and policies at the Morris site and as part of relevant corporate networks and teams. The individual serving in this capacity will function as the site's interface with HSE regulatory agencies

Roles & Responsibilities


• Leads the HSES function to ensure continuous improvement of the HSE programs and performance.

• Establishes and maintains Key Performance Indicators used to measure the site's HSE performance.

• Ensures the HSES programs and practices are consistent with LyondellBasell's Operational Excellence Standards and in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.

• Develops and recommends business driven and cost effective HSES and risk reduction strategies for the site.

• Proactively develops and deploys HSES programs to reduce work-related injuries and illnesses and prevent harm to the environment.

• Acts as the champion to ensure proper investigation and follow-up on safety concerns, near misses and incidents.

• Responsible for networking and communicating with Corporate HSE, legal, and other site HSE organizations.

• Addresses internal and external customer inquiries and reporting requirements regarding health, safety, environmental and security matters.

• Builds relationships and maintains on-going communications with plant staff and manufacturing personnel to develop and maintain a collaborative work environment.

• Manages organizational aspects, succession planning, and talent management strategies for the Health, Safety, Environmental, and Security functions to develop staff with expertise and knowledge. Sets performance and development goals for their staff of ten (10) employees.

• Responsible for managing and maintaining a well-staffed and trained Emergency Response Team (ERT) and contract security force.

• Manages HSES budget and associated cost centers.

Min. Qualifications


• B.S. degree in engineering, relevant sciences or specific HSES discipline.

• A minimum of 8 years of chemical plant or refinery operations experience, or education and equivalent experience in chemical or refinery industry

• Previous supervisory and/or leadership experience preferred.

• Working knowledge of the regulatory processes applicable to a plant operation and experience representing a company to the various regulatory agencies

• Knowledge of and experience with HSE, operating, maintenance, and engineering processes and procedures, business fundamentals, and shared services role in manufacturing

• Strong people and organizational leadership acumen demonstrated through previous experience within manufacturing and across the organization.

• Exceptional oral and written communication skills and the ability to interface with all organizational levels within the company.
