HOCU:

Serve as a senior uniformed, commissioned law enforcement officer which includes investigation, apprehension, arrest, detention, or prosecution of persons and entities violating applicable laws, rules, and regulations enacted to protect and provide for the safe use of lands managed by the National Park Service (NPS) and the Department of the Interior.

Serve as a Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) certified training official in one or more core areas within the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection to include serving as an NPS Field Training Officer.

Responsible for program development, coordination, planning and direction as it relates to visitor and resource protection. Technical advisor to management for the more complex agency policies, guidelines, training standards and case law.

The position here covers 4 parks in Southern Ohio:

Duty Station is Hopewell Culture NHP (Chillicothe, OH), but the position also supports William Howard Taft NHS (Cincinati, OH), Dayton Aviation NHP (Dayton, OH), and Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers NM (Xenia, OH).


HOSP:

Serve as the Law Enforcement Specialist for the park and provides technical advice to the Chief Park Ranger, District Rangers and field staff.

Relied upon as an authority within the organization regarding plans, direction and coordination of Law Enforcement activities. Assist with the coordination and oversight of multi-incident and/or agency investigations. Investigate and coordinate non-complex fatality investigations. Provide guidance to field staff on incident reporting requirements to meet the elements of the crime.

Plan and conduct case investigations of persons or organizations that may involve various investigative methods, such as surveillance, development and use of undercover or covert operations to determine if a crime has occurred.

Investigations may be sensitive and jurisdictional problems may exist.

Physical Demands:

HOCU:
Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement, search and rescue, medical and related emergency activities. Lifting or carrying equipment weighing over 50 pounds, such as emergency equipment, or search and rescue equipment is required. There is a physical, mental and emotional high-stress component to much of the incumbent's work assignment. Position is required to meet and continuously maintain the physical/medical standards as set forth in the requirements of D.O. #57.

HOSP:
The incumbent may be required to perform physically rigorous assignments.

The work may require physical exertion, such as regular and recurring long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces; mountainous terrain; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activity; carrying of equipment weighing 50 pounds or less; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as fire packs and rescue gear.

The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above average agility and dexterity. Mandatory physical fitness and medical standards apply to the incumbent of this position.

Work Environment:

The work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations.

The incumbent is frequently exposed to high-risk and potentially dangerous situations in law enforcement and emergency situations requiring use of a wide range of personal protective gear, adherence to specific safety procedures and other precautions.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:


Prior to appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician.

You will also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations throughout employment.

Prior to appointment, the people selected for these positions must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB).

The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat.

Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile.
