What You Will Do:

The HR Generalist, Benefits Focus will play a vital role in supporting our benefits department in ensuring the successful administration of all NLU Benefits plans. The ability to pay close attention to detail and understand the importance that accuracy plays in ensuring that our employees have access to all benefits and are properly enrolled. NLU's continued success relies on the health, wellness, dedication, and support of our Faculty and Staff. The NLU benefits team plays a crucial role in helping to support our employees with a valuable total compensation package that provides the resources our employees need to take care of their families, manage healthcare costs and build financial security for the future. This position will be the first contact many of our employees have with the benefits department and will need to show empathy and a keen understanding of all of the benefits we offer at NLU.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Answer general inquiries from employees and applicants relative to health and welfare plans, 403(b) retirement plans, standard University policies (paid time off, FMLA, holidays), tuition waiver and exchange programs, qualifying life events and enrollment processes.
  • Process new hire, separation, Open Enrollment and qualifying life event benefit enrollments quickly and accurately, including required documentation for Payroll team to ensure accurate record-keeping and proper deductions.
  • Manage employee benefit issues/complaints which includes understanding of what could be handled independently as well as knowing when and how to involve carriers, brokers, Associate Director or Benefits and/or Director of Benefits.
  • Monitor new hires' eligibility for 403(b) matching plan, obtains verification of employment for those with relevant employment history, provides enrollment instruction, processes contribution changes, periodically audits required agreements and provides outreach to non-participating employees.
  • Maintain employee benefits database and digital employee benefits files.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, strongly preferred. Those with some college and extensive related work experience will also be considered.
  • Ideally at least one year of experience working in employee benefits administration. Minimum of 1 year of experience working in human resources in some capacity.
  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment
  • Experience working in Higher Education a plus
  • Knowledge of Banner 9 software or other similar database, preferred
