DPWES provides award-winning solid waste collection services for approximately 45,000 homes, operates a transfer station and landfill, regulates solid waste services, and leads sustainability initiatives to promote zero waste goals for Fairfax County. DPWES Solid Waste is a diverse work force of approximately 300 merit and 50 non-merit employees and has an annual operating budget of more than $100M. Our nationally-recognized team of professionals are working together towards a singular goal: providing environmentally-responsible and cost-effective management of municipal solid waste, keeping Fairfax County safe, green, healthy, and clean.

Provides hands-on, technical support to monitor, operate and maintain environmental infrastructure at the I-95 with an emphasis on leachate pumping infrastructure, landfill gas management systems and stormwater management facilities. Experience in construction, operation and maintenance of this infrastructure or ability to transfer mechanical aptitude is desirable. Ability to operate small construction equipment such as backhoe, skid steer, and forklift. Interprets maps and engineering plans. Gathers and analyzes monitoring data, and evaluates equipment performance to inform operation, maintenance and repairs. Identifies requirements and specifications necessary to repair and replace equipment and infrastructure. Maintains files and records to support environmental compliance requirements. Makes simple computations to determine type and quantities of construction materials and equipment. Researches and evaluates new equipment for potential application at the landfill and maintains supplies. Design simple structures.

Note: The appointee to this position is subject to emergency callback 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flood, and other emergencies requiring division resources. Being on-call periodically is a requirement of this position.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, three years of engineering technical support work.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:A valid driver's license.Class II Waste Management Facilities Operator's License - Training required within 18 months of hire.OSHA Approved Confined Space Training (16 Hour Course) within 6 months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Five years of experience constructing, operating or maintaining landfill systems. Two years' experience maintaining and monitoring gas wells and Leachate Collection Systems. Ability to follow oral directions and written instruction. Experience in the use of Microsoft Office computer software.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. without assistance and 25 to 50 lbs. with or without assistance. Ability to operate a computer and general office equipment. Ability to operate a vehicle. Ability to walk, stand, sit, bend, stretch, climb, kneel, crouch, stoop, lift and work in positions for lengthy periods of time and be able to enter confined spaces by crawling, reaching and stooping. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and temperatures. Ability to work in an area where loud noise and heavy moving equipment exists. Able to walk, negotiate or traverse property sites that may be undergoing construction or having terrain that is not level. Manual strength and dexterity needed to handle materials, equipment and perform basic duties. Visual acuity is required to read and operate electronic & field monitoring equipment. Work may involve performing tasks in an environment which raw waste is present. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
