Summary

The Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) is located in the Mental Health Care Line and serves to facilitate implementation of suicide prevention strategies at the local level through education, monitoring, and coordination activities. The SPC provides advanced evaluation and treatment strategies to the full range of patient problems in the work setting, including providing evidenced based interventions.

The Senior Social Worker (Suicide Prevention Coordinator) identifies Veterans at High Risk for suicide, offers direction to providers regarding delivery of enhanced care to High Risk Veterans, completes required chart review after a suicide or suicide attempt and serves as a consultant to frontline staff in the area of suicide. The SPC educates providers, Veterans, families, and members of the community about risk factors and warning signs for suicide and treatment options. This is primarily a virtual position, with occasional local travel expected in the local community.

Duties for the position may include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying Veterans that are at High Risk for suicide and assisting in the maintenance of the Facility High Risk List.
  • Assuring that all Veterans on the Facility High Risk List are either offered enhanced treatment in accordance with VACO requirements and as determined by the provider or that appropriate outreach efforts are being made to engage Veteran in treatment.
  • Tracking any no-show appointments by these patients and coordinating provider follow up with the patient as soon as possible to assess current functioning, suicide risk, request welfare check as needed and to reschedule the appointment.
  • Interfacing with Psychiatric Inpatient Units to determine acuity of Veterans at risk for suicide and assisting with coordination of aftercare.
  • Facilitating liaisons with other health care programs to effectively coordinate services for High Risk Veterans.
  • Reviewing and tracking all suicide attempts using the "Suicide Behavior & Overdose Report" and either identifying these Veterans as High Risk for Suicide or offering rationale why they are not High Risk as well as ensuring these behaviors are classified using Self-Directed Violence nomenclature.
  • Completing applicable duties after a suicide or suicide attempt including Issue Briefs, Behavioral Autopsies (BHAP), Family Interview Telephone Contact (FIT-C), Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and postvention briefings.
  • Participation in the Patient Flag Review committee and other workgroups as directed by supervision.
  • Ensuring timely follow up to all Veteran's Crisis Line calls in accordance with VACO requirements.
  • Delivering evidenced based interventions relating to best practices for suicide prevention.
  • Assuring compliance with Joint Commission standards related to suicide prevention.
  • Assisting with regularly scheduled environmental scans on inpatient psychiatric units to identify elements of the architecture or care process that may lead to suicidal behaviors, and follow-up as needed.
  • Assisting in ongoing data-driven evaluation to monitor efficacy of suicide prevention programming.
  • Conducting on-going suicide prevention training with both clinical and non-clinical staff to assure that they are able to respond to patients during crisis situations.
  • Must have and maintain a valid unrestricted driver's license.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Subject to change to meet the needs of the Agency

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of existing pay, higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)

Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)

Telework: Telework, if approved, would be on a regularly scheduled basis, but this is not a virtual or remote position.
