Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.



Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides/demonstrates entry level basic nursing care to patients with a variety of need under close supervision of a RN.
  • Maintains acceptable standards in health care setting under close supervision of a RN.
  • Expected to perform all duties, providing quality care for stable patients within the scope of their licensure.
  • Completed work may require routine or detailed higher-level review depending on the complexity of the duties.
  • Data Collection/Entry.
  • Accurately collects all pertinent information and documents on the patient database.
  • Observes, recognizes, reports and responds appropriately to physical, emotional and behavioral changes.
  • Recognizes deviations from the norm and acts immediately, notifying RN and documents findings.
  • Organizes daily workload so that patient care assignment is completed timely.

  • Assists with admission of new patients to the unit (e.g., assist with new patient orientation, armband placement, armband alerts, vital signs, weight/ height, belongings inventory, breathalyzer).
  • Makes modification to patient care plans considering physical, emotional, and social factors.
  • Participates in both nursing and interdisciplinary team conferences for patient care. Contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's treatment plan.
  • Actively supports the team concept and functions as a facilitator of the team concept. Contributes to team initiatives and continuously strives to improve the effectiveness of the team to which they are assigned.
  • Demonstrates courteous, prompt, and helpful interactions in personal and telephone encounters with residents, visitors, and staff.
  • Uses Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendations (S.B.A.R.) with each patient hand-off.
  • Demonstrate ICARE core values in all interactions.
  • All other duties as assigned, pertaining to this occupation, to meet the needs of the Agency, Department, Facility, and/or Service.
  • Bladder catheterizations/irrigations.
  • Enteral tube feedings including instillation of medications via enteral feeding tubes.
  • Oxygen therapy to resident using cannula or mask, tracheostomy.
  • Tracheostomy care, including suctioning and cleaning healed site.
  • Colostomy irrigations.
  • Removal of simple to complex dressings on all types of wounds.
  • Application and/or removal of braces, splints and slings.
  • Post-mortem care.
  • Monitors IV therapy and discontinues infusion.
  • Start IV's as ordered by the physician.
  • Hang, monitor, maintain and discontinue IV medications/fluids.
  • Hang piggyback medications which are compatible with existing intravenous fluids.
  • May verify blood and blood products with an RN.
  • May administer saline flush orders for a peripheral line saline lock.
  • After training and demonstrated competency, inserts peripheral intravenous catheters; hangs specified peripheral intravenous fluids/medications; and monitors, maintains and discontinues infusions. Utilizes mechanical equipment such as infusion pumps.
  • Assists with orientation of new residents/staff to the CLC house.
