Job Description

Heron Virtual Academy of South Carolina (HVASC) is an accredited public school serving students in grades 8-12.

HVASC offers smaller staff-to-student ratios, personalized graduation plans, daily mentoring sessions and wraparound services to help meet the educational and social/emotional needs of our unique student population.

Special Education Teacher provide instruction, support and guidance, manage the learning process, and focus on students' individual needs as defined by each student's IEP.

The special education teacher is also responsible for the compliance documents required in serving students with special needs.

This is a full-time position. Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week is required.

Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 9-5 (or 8-4) or as defined by the school.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Implement instructional strategies that stimulate learning and increase student engagement
  • Create instructional resources to meet the varying needs of students
  • Collaborate with parents and colleagues to manage coarse goals, curriculum, and materials that enhance the learning experience
  • Actively participate in Professional Learning Communities (or professional development)
  • Host live synchronous sessions that promote a positive learning environment
  • Analyze student data to prescribe remediation and enrichment as needed
  • Participate in data analysis meetings to monitor student growth
  • Collects data and work samples to support documentation of IEP goals;
  • Documents all contact with parents, collaborations with general education teachers, and interventions with students
  • Makes modifications and accommodations to K12 lessons and assessments as specified by the IEP
  • Collaborates with general education teachers to ensure inclusion and success of student in the general education classroom
  • Collaborates on all progress, semester and grade reports
  • Provides special education services to students; supports general education teachers and parents with student accommodations to promote the attainment of IEP goals
  • Communicates with parents and applicable related service staff to ensure that students with special needs are receiving the appropriate therapies
  • Ensures compliance by holding all IEP meetings prior to the IEP end date
  • Enters accommodations into school based program to ensure 100% accommodation compliance for all testing sessions
  • Attends school based face to face outings and professional development sessions as scheduled
Relationship Building

  • Establishes and maintains positive rapport with families and regularly communicates with students and learning coaches/parents;
  • Teachers support learning coaches/parents with student curricular and instructional issues in a virtual classroom environment that is in line with academy policies and procedures;
  • Supports students and learning coaches with the setup and maintenance of their learning environment including basic computer troubleshooting;
  • Understands how both diverse and unique characteristics of students and their families impact required support;
  • Works collaboratively with other teachers to ensure that all students are successfully progressing through the program, that parents have a central point of contact, and that tasks are distributed among the stakeholders;
  • Responds to students, parents, and colleagues in a timely manner.
Other Essential Functions

  • Organizes social and educational activities for students and families, including sponsorship of virtual clubs, outings, marketing events or other extracurricular activities as required;
  • Travels to testing sites to proctor state exams.

Certificates and Licenses:
Appropriate South Carolina state Special Education teaching certification

Residency Requirements:
South Carolina residency preferred

MINIMUM

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree(s) AND
  • Minimum six (6) months of student teaching experience
  • Teachers with one or more years of teaching experience are required to provide past performance data.

  • Prior Year State Assessment Data
  • Reference Letter(s)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree AND
  • Six (6) months of student teaching experience AND
  • Ability to clear required background check(s)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Pedagogical knowledge of content being taught and ability to apply critical thinking
  • Knowledge of state content standards and ability to align those with the K12 curriculum
  • Ability to embrace change and adapt to ensure excellent student outcomes
  • Ability to problem solve independently and have a high level of organization
  • Understanding of interdependency of deadlines on multiple projects and able to act to preserve integrity on other people's deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week
  • Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 95 (or 84) or as defined by the school
  • Ability to travel as required (on average once per month and/or approximately 10% of the time) for facetoface professional development, student testing, and as required by school
  • Access to reliable highspeed internet
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word; PowerPoint;
  • Ability to rapidly learn and adapt to new technologies and teaching platforms
  • Ability to maintain teacher certification/professional development hours and fluency in K12 systems, programs and curriculum
  • Experience working with proposed age group
  • Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology
  • Experience working in a virtual environment
  • Experience teaching in an online (virtual) and/or in a brickandmortar environment
  • Experience with Blackboard Collaborative, Newrow, Edgelink, or other online platforms

OTHER

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel at least once per month within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, attend regularly scheduled meetings, and participate in school activities, open houses and orientations.
  • Experience working with the proposed age group
  • Experience supporting adults and children in the use of technology
  • An ability to learn new technology tools quickly (e.g., database and webbased tools)
  • Ability to clear required background check(s)
Compensation and Benefits

Certified staff are compensated based on degree earned and years of experience on their certificate. Non-certified staff are compensated based on a combination of education and relevant experience.

We offer state health benefits and retirement through PEBA as well as deferred compensation through Empower and supplemental plans through Colonial Life.
