Duties

The Marion VA Health Care System, also known as Marion Veterans Administration Hospital, is a Veterans Affairs hospital in Marion, Illinois. The hospital is responsible for providing healthcare to over 43,000 U.S. military veterans in Southern Illinois and neighboring states. The Marion, IL Medical Center, and the Evansville, IN Healthcare Center are looking for Pain Management Physicians

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Physicians appointed to the Medical Staff of the Marion VA Healthcare System and assigned to the Specialty Care Section of the Medicine Service will function as independent licensed practitioners. The clinician will spend most of her/his time in direct patient care. Some portion of her/his time may be spent in the supervision of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, or medical students. The physician may have some limited administrative work.

In the Specialty Care Section, the interventional pain management physician will spend most of their patient care time in the outpatient setting. Clinical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate new patients by performing comprehensive history, physical examination, and record review,
  • Formulate a diagnostic and management plan.
  • Follow up on established patients will occur at the direction and discretion of the specialist.
  • Release patients back to the management of their primary care provider if/when it is deemed appropriate.
  • Occasionally serve as a consultant for the hospitalist service on a relatively small inpatient unit when patient care would be improved by the additional expertise.
  • Oversee the interdisciplinary pain management team which will include pharmacy, nursing, social work, and physical therapy.
  • Determining treatment regimens, patient suitability for treatment, and integration of whole health modalities.
  • Perform procedures such as epidural injections, facet joint injections, trigger point injections, narcotic pump placement and adjustment, and additional procedural modalities as warranted by training and experience.
Administrative Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Leadership responsibilities: participation in staff meetings, hospital committees, and peer review process. Demonstrate effective communication both down to staff and up to leadership, to include heads up for unanticipated or less than ideal patient outcomes, and occasionally acting as Section Chief when the Section Chief is on leave
  • Maintaining VA training requirements, timely completion of documentation and upkeep of credentials required for privileging and re-privileging as per medical staff by-laws. Participation in the FPPE/OPPE process.
  • Adherence to tour of duties, timely requests for leave in current time management system and for clinic cancellations.
  • Timely completion of consults, notes, encounters. Adherence to CPRS documentation rules and requirements. Adherence to clinic, and OR, procedures for patient scheduling and access
