Position Overview
This is a skilled position involving control and operation of the screed on the asphalt paving machine. Thorough understanding of all aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving. The operator will control material taken into the paver and the depths of material distributed through the machine. The operator also leads in planning out the job, walking and marking plan with foreman or paver operator (or both), measuring out the passes, determining the yield of a truckload of material, communicating with the paving operator to keep the pace of job steady, and monitoring the mat, edges, joints, and other aspects of job quality.

Location: Salem, OR is homebase. Must be willing to travel as needed for business demands within the Willamette Valley.

Shift: days/nights/weekends. Varies based on business demands.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a current member or able to join Operators#701.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • At least 1-2 years' previous experience in construction, specifically in paving equipment/operations or related education/experience.
  • Must have knowledge of proper equipment operation, grade, and work operations.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical exam and pre-employment controlled substance testing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and nights as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to conform to and maintain OSHA, MSHA, DOT and all other company or state rules and regulations.
  • Must have current US Authorization to work or ability to obtain without company assistance prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid CDL License
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
  • Operate Roller, Paver or Screed, Blade, Loader, Backhoe, or other heavy equipment.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and secures equipment on trailer.
  • Assist labor crew including shoveling, raking, and compacting of asphalt materials.
  • Routinely assist other members of the workforce in different areas of production.
  • Promptly communicate with supervisors on any flaws in material.
  • Take action to avoid potential hazards or obstructions.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned to meet business needs.
  • Regular and timely attendance.
  • Participate in and promote an inclusive work environment.
