Consider how to share your topic in a way that is clear, regarding messaging, speaking, managing, persuading, helping, organizing, etc. all the topics we've covered in class so far.

Because you will also be taking a Final Quiz on the textbook, skim all of the chapters and review the quizzes/your class notes before finalizing this Presentation and your Report.

Audience and Purpose

Your purpose is to inform your audience of business students about a significant managerial (top-down) communication topic. Focus on a topic that receives attention in academic journal articles, trade literature for managers, or trade books.

From your report, your readers should be able to apply practical, research-based advice for dealing with a managerial communication problem.

Time Limits


Prepare a persuasive presentation, between 5-7 minutes if you are working individually and between 12-15 minutes if you are working in a group.

Presentations that are under or exceed the time limit will receive deductions. Because we won't be able to get through everyone, I will cut you off once you reach 7 mins.

Visual Aids

You need to incorporate professional visual aids (PowerPoint or other slides) into your presentation.

General guidelines for designing slides:

  • Include a Title Page with Name and Presentation Title
  • You should have one major message per slide that is presented with images and minimal text
  • The text should be readable (24 pt. or larger), applying document design and readability principles (e.g., avoiding solid caps, italics, wraparound lines and all bold)
  • Express meaning in concrete and concise language, using key terms (with bullets or numbered lists) instead of too much text
  • Use images, diagrams etc. to support the message
  • The design and color should be subdued and professional, and not distracting
  • Use short, clear headings on each slide
  • Provide references (names and dates) for all sources and images on each page, instead of a list at the end of the report


You will have between about 4 and 12 slides, depending on how you use them and how much info is on each slide.

References and Research

The Presentation requires a minimum of five references that you MUST verbally cite, with full source information (author and their credentials, date, type of source, title of article/book) in your presentation.


You must include one each of the following:
An academic journal article
A newspaper or news website
A book or book chapter
Limit the use of encyclopedias and blogs.

As references that have full source information, including an author, and especially experts in the field who have conducted academic studies, are more credible, limit your selection of websites that do not provide an author.

Use Google Scholar and/or one of the many research databases that Wayne provides, such as the following:
General Business (Gale), Accounting, Taxation, & Business Law, or Communication & Mass Media Complete.
