The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff.

Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond.

As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department's highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest.

The Department's robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health.

The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care.

Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development.

Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.


The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Research Study Assistant.

Responsibilities

  • Collect and update public policy and climate data relevant to sexual minority women generally and Black sexual minority women specifically.
  • Identify and implement strategies to maximize the relevance and cultural sensitivity of study procedures to sexual minority women generally and Black sexual minority women specifically.
  • Identify and implement culturally-relevant strategies to increase study enrollment and retention among sexual minority women generally and Black sexual minority women specifically
  • Support the team's development of relationships with relevant community stakeholders, such as agencies serving people who are LGBTQ+, Black, and/or survivors of sexual assault.
  • Assist with the revision of human subjects applications and consent forms in compliance with applicable regulations
  • Assist with the creation, testing, and implementation of study systems and processes.
  • Assist with the monitoring and management of study data.
  • Interact with participants for the purposes of screening, data validity checks, and retention.
  • Meet regularly with a community advisory board reflecting members of our target population.
  • Assist with administrative duties including scheduling meetings, planning meeting agendas, taking notes in meetings, planning travel, managing vendor contracts, reimbursing expenses, and filing paperwork
  • Implement research protocols and monitor participant adherence to protocol; take action to correct problems such as deviations from protocol requirements.
  • Assist in the modification of procedures for collecting and summarizing data.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned/required.

  • Maintain knowledge of all relevant study procedures and expectations (e.g., from IRB, funder, PI, and others).
  • Proactively identify and resolve instances of conflicting instructions, information, documentation, priorities, and/or project requirements.
  • In an ongoing manner, identify strategies to improve performance based on feedback and self-reflection.
  • Effectively manage competing time demands, prioritize appropriately while maintaining efficiency, and troubleshoot solutions when time management challenges arise.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of all study systems related to task assignments; use study systems in a manner consistent with documentation and verbal instructions.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience OR equivalent education/experience.

  • Cultural sensitivity relevant to sexual minority and/or Black populations.
  • Ability to both work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
  • High motivation and strong time management; ability to produce quality work in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • High conscientiousness.
  • Strong skills in critical and "big picture" thinking; ability to place tasks in the broader context of the study and anticipate future tasks given big-picture study needs.
  • Interest in research related to sexual minority populations, public policy, and/or sexual assault.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or knowledge relevant to Black and/or sexual minority populations.
  • Experience working with epidemiological data.
