Fairbanks, Alaska, United States Work Arctic Full time

Guiding with Northern Alaska Tour Company is a high-energy position best suited to individuals who make social connections easily, who genuinely love interacting with others and who thrive in positions of responsibility.

All of our tours are ground-based, traveling into northern Alaska on the industrial road called the Dalton Highway. We use 15 passenger vans configured to carry up to 10 persons and 26 passenger coaches.

Our evening aurora guide picks up guests at hotels on their way out to our cabin located at 49 mile Elliott Highway. This is where we spend the evening with our guests searching the skies overhead for the Aurora Borealis.
Our guide will start a contained hand warming fire outside and serve hot beverages to guests, who have a cozy warm cabin to use as a place to rest, relax and thaw out during the coldest winter temperatures. Knowledge and interest in photographing the Aurora Borealis is a definite PLUS

Our guide training includes intensive Professional Vehicle Operator Training that will result in the obtaining of a class B commercial driver license. In addition, beginning guides receive instruction in tour design and in effective, professional guiding techniques. Guides will do a "ride-along" tour with a seasoned veteran and perform a "solo tour" without paying guests before going out with their first group.

Our 120+hour vehicle operator training program will begin in mid-July.

Evening Aurora Guide Schedule (tours begin August 21st):

  • Work hours: 7:30pm - 4:30am (or later depending on road and aurora conditions)
  • 1 to 5 days per week
  • 9-10 hours per day [dependent upon the excursion guided]
  • 9 to 50 hours per week [dependent upon full time or part time status]

Housing and transportation are available as part of a guide's compensation package. Housing is shared with other coworkers. Apartments are 2 miles from our office location and meals are not provided with our Fairbanks based positions.

*Northern Alaska Tour Company has provided a supportive environment for Tobacco-Free coworkers since 1986*
