Pulmonary Endoscopy Technician

JOB SUMMARY:
Provides comprehensive assistance to pulmonary physicians in the bronchoscopy procedure areas during diagnostic procedures to aid in diagnosis and treatment.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Graduate of an AMA approved two or four-year program for respiratory care or satisfies the requirements as outlined in the admissions policies of the NBRC for registry examinations
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) and licensed to practice as a RCP in the state of North Carolina (NCRCB). Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are both required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provides technical and clinical support during pulmonary procedures such as bronchoscopy, EBUS, EMN, thoracentesis, pleural biopsy and collection of specimen that aids in diagnosis and treatment. 2. Prepares patient and procedure room for treatments. 3. Ensures specimen collection process is in accordance to proper guidelines provided by the Pathology 4. Laboratory department. 5. Provides a clinical experience for new staff within the bronchoscopy procedure areas to enhance their knowledge and clinical skills. 6. Ensures a clean and stocked clinical area in the procedure areas and decontamination room. 7. Assists physicians during bedside procedures for bronchoscopy in critical care areas & the OR suites. 8. Provides oxygen support as needed during procedures within the bronchoscopy areas under the direction of the pulmonary physician. 9. Consistently maintains technical knowledge and competencies related to all equipment used for all pulmonary cases. 10. Administers medications/drugs during testing and procedures in accordance with protocols and departmental policies/procedures. 11. Ensures age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age-Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served. 12. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building. 13. Maintains yearly competencies related to reprocessing of scopes used for pulmonary procedures. 14. Cross train as endoscopy technicians showing full competencies in reprocessing scopes approved by Infection Prevention. 15. Maintain clinical competency and endorsement through the NCRCB for conscious sedation.

Communicates on a professional level with physicians, nurses and other ancillary staff Provides quality results for diagnostic testing Provides a teaching environment for students Maintains a clean work area
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Comfortable climate, well lit, and low noise Works with toxic chemicals occasionally Subject to long, stressful hours Frequent exposure to the risk of bloodborne diseases in collecting patient specimens Possible exposure to radiation Potential exposure to airborne pathogens (TB)
