Job Title: K- 8 School Counselor

Location: Austin International School

We are seeking a dynamic and empathetic multilingual School Counselor to join our team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about supporting students' social and emotional well-being, as well as facilitating their academic success by closely following and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs), and supporting teachers in providing the best support, differentiation and accommodations to our students. The School Counselor will work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and parents to ensure that each student receives the necessary support to thrive academically and emotionally.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions to students, addressing a variety of social, emotional, and academic concerns with a focus on positive discipline and reinforcement.
  • Develop and implement (or help to access) individualized educational plans (IEPs) for students with diverse learning needs, collaborating closely with teachers, parents, and special education staff.
  • Conduct assessments and evaluations to identify students' strengths, challenges, and areas for growth, and use this information to inform counseling interventions and support strategies.
  • Support students in developing essential social and emotional skills, such as self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and interpersonal communication.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate social emotional learning (SEL) into the curriculum and classroom practices, providing resources and guidance as needed.
  • Assist students in setting and achieving academic and personal goals, fostering a sense of agency and resilience.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support for students experiencing acute emotional distress or challenging life circumstances.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions, assessments, and student progress, ensuring compliance with relevant privacy laws and regulations.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, teachers, and other stakeholders to provide updates on student progress and collaborate on support strategies.
  • Participate in professional development activities to stay current on best practices in school counseling, social emotional learning, and multicultural competence. Requirements:
    • Master's degree in Counseling, School Counseling, or related field.
    • State certification or licensure as a school counselor (if applicable).
    • Demonstrated experience in providing counseling and support services to students in an educational setting.
    • Background in special education
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport with students, parents, and colleagues from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
    • Proficiency in more than one of the languages taught at the school (if applicable) is highly desirable.
    • Knowledge of social emotional learning (SEL) principles and strategies, and experience integrating SEL into educational practices.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including teachers, administrators, special education staff, and external service providers.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
    • Previous teaching experience is an extra plus. Additional: Fluency in more than one language is a plus Experience teaching is a plus Background in school psychology is a plus
