This is a 90-day internship in the Office of GIS, requiring qualifications below the entry-level position of GIS Technician. This position is responsible for working with GIS Specialists on projects and applying a variety of GIS skills and abilities to provide mapping and analysis services to internal customers and the public.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidates should have completed significant coursework in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field including hands-on experience through internships or class projects.
  • Candidates should be able to demonstrate technical competency for completing a bachelor's or advanced degree in a related field.
  • Experience must demonstrate specific GIS skills including: map creation, general computer usage, GIS analysis, and database manipulation.
  • Desired GIS experience should include ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro.
  • Database experience should include manipulating GIS data, integrating various data formats, and manipulating GIS data in various forms.
  • Basic understanding of web-based applications and services including ArcGIS Online, Esri REST services, WMS and WFS.

Duties & Responsibilities

These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.

  1. Apply GIS technology to a variety of business problems under the direction and guidance of GIS Specialists.
  2. Perform basemap updating of roads, buildings, sidewalks, etc. using aerial photography.
  3. Respond to customer requests by providing GIS maps, services, and support by applying GIS technology efficiently, effectively, and responsively.
  4. Complete assigned projects in a timely manner, coordinating activities with GIS Specialists.
  5. Identify technical issues and problems related to assigned projects, discuss them with GIS Specialists, and provide assistance in developing solutions, process modifications, and process documentation.
  6. Perform a variety of tasks to assist GIS Specialists and the Office of GIS as a whole to increase productivity and gain increased knowledge of GIS tools and techniques used at Dakota County.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities and Work Environment
  • Skill and ability to work with GIS Specialists on various aspects of applying GIS to produce maps and analytical solutions.
  • Knowledge of cartographic principles and GIS analytical concepts and ability to use GIS software to apply them.
  • Knowledge of basic web-based GIS principles and how to apply them using GIS software, including a basic understanding of ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of database principles and data formats and ability to use it to organize, process, and analyze data to produce GIS solutions.
  • Skill and ability to communicate both written and orally with other team members.
  • Ability to work independently while identifying situations where additional expertise is required and effectively communicating needs to GIS Specialists for assistance.
  • Skills to perform data collection using a variety of techniques including photo interpretation, on-screen digitizing, GPS fieldwork, and coordinate geometry.
  • Ability to learn on the job and expand technical knowledge as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is primarily sedentary, although there is some walking, travel, and carrying of lightweight items such as briefcases, notebooks, and work papers. The work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office. Remote work may be an option depending on individual circumstances. May require occasional travel.

SELECTION PROCESS: The examination/selection process for this classification will consist of a rating of your training and experience from the application materials submitted. The top scoring candidates will be forwarded to the hiring department for further consideration.
